Met a computer expert over Christmas. Works in IT in States
Had a Ipad 2 WiFi 3G with him which he spent some time demonstrating to me. Nice bloke, just showed me what it could do without loads of jargon.

Apparently it has a stand alone sat nav (ie does not need to be online) He sees no reason why it would not work on a bike in ,for instance tank bag.

Anyone got any views or indeed experience of such a use.

Cheaper than a Zumo660 and easily carried on bike and would also enable us to get emails and use Skype throughout Europe.

I do the same

Yes.

GPS
Movies
Audio
Skype / FaceTime
Email
Camera

Too easy, data for me in shanghai is cheap as chips though

I've not got an iPad. Though def would like one. I have got a free stand alone sat nav on my I phone and for free have found it great. Not quite as sophisticated as a proper unit and I have got the zumo 660 on my bike. Mainly as I didn't want to risk the phone being subject to a downpour in a tank bag. Plus it was another bit of bling for the bike. However it would definately provide a nice big screen. You would want to make sure that your map case is waterproof though.
