ViaMichelin produce a free trafic app giving showing the current travelling conditions on French motorways. But, it it seems to have one big additional advantge.

I noticed that the app builds on top of the very popular 1:200,000 scale map. For those who do not know, 1:200,000 is the scale that shows all the main roads, motorways, N (National) and the smaller D roads and those with the 'scenic' green borders to them.

The underlying map is obscured when in 'motorway data' view. But if you zoom in or click on the city view, the map zooms in to reveal the underlying more detailed map, too. From there, simply drag the map around France. Bingo! One free and detailed map set, which will also zoom in to under 1:200,000 too.

The app's mapping also contracts and expands nicely, using the classic 'two or three fingered' expand / collapse method.

I haven't worked out how the Favourite maps work yet.

Must try that on my wife's iPad. Created a route in viamichelin yeterday and used the "download to GPS" option - sadly it only transferred my list of start, end and waypoints to Mapsource

The app will not allow routing.

I have now got the Favourites to work, too. The mapframe is saved, appearing as a 'layer' to the left of the screen, under its own name. Tap on it and up it comes. This would be useful if someone was staying in a town for a few days as it saves scrolling around.

You are quite right, the ViaMichelin site's 'download to GPS' function still does not work. which is a real pity. I have had several email exchanges with Michelin on it, even offering to to test a Beta edition for them. Now that spring is here, I will have a fresh go at them.

Whoa! Now I have looked at it properly. This is an incredible app.

It carries detailed mapping for the whole of Europe! London down to probably 20 yards or less, the other big cities the same. I picked Ravenna in Italy at random. It is not a large place but the mapping at street level is better than Mapsource and as good as Google maps. The app loads fast and on a good internet connection re-loads fast, too.

I am not sure Michelin appreciate quite what they have done.

The Favourites work really well, too. Select a map area and scale that suits you, save it under a name that you like, then zoom in and out.

All for free, with local traffic news too, which extends into the UK. Can't be bad!

From now on if you want to find the, "Yellow great twisty roads with a green border, no motorways, mate" get an iPad and load a free Michelin app. It really is that easy.... or buy a map!

In comparison to the landmass of France, motorways are not that large, You'll manage. :comfort :D

A really nice looking app. i wonder how it would look on an I pad :augie

Just a note for Wapping, I was in the local 'Culture' section in LeClerc yesterday looking at some of the books and not sure if you are aware but there is a new book out :thumb2

No need to even buy the maps - just select the areas/scale you want, apply the route overlay and print out the screen grab from your PC

If Michelin would allow us to make a direct route transfer to Mapsource this could be the ultimate planning tool, after all the mapping is pretty well up to date - more than can be said for Garmin/Navteq/TeleAtlas/Google maps or even their own paper versions!

Ace.
thanks for sharing
Plus I see they also add what looks like fixed and mobile camera points?
:clap

What I should have added is that there is also free mapping available through Michelin's hotel app.

The mapping misses the popular 1:200,000 scale but is good on a national level and on minor streets, too.

Between the two free app's you probably have everything you need.

Theres also the same app for UK roads with the same level of mapping.
