So - sorry to be a bit thick about this - the app must use the standard 'built-in' map app on the iPhone which relies on a wifi connection or data download, no? The maps aren't actually stored on the device?

That's what I was looking for too. I see no download map option.
So if you want to use this away from wifi you need 3G and then abroad you'll be paying for data roaming all the time. That will make for a very expensive gps!

Yup, certain of it now. Just downloaded the app to my PC and it is nowhere near big enough to contain maps of Europe.
