iPad slooow: too many photos stored?

On holiday and taking lots (and lots) of photos, putting them on to the iPad by putting the SD card into a reader(?) which plugs into the iPad. After uploading the last couple of hundred the iPad has become a lot slower. It's the 8Gb model and now has 5,300 photos and sixty-something videos (all of which are a minute or so long) stored.

Is that the reason why it's slow?

PS, probably best mention that I'm staying at a hotel where I think the WiFi should be of a reasonable speed, but is there a way I can test that- or test owt else that might be relevant?

PPS I need to know before trying to store today's crop of three hundred pics (I know- I just can't stop...) and am scared to try it in case I clog up the thing totally.

Sounds like you are running out of storage space.

To test the wifi - either do a speed test (ZDNET for example) - or simply try to watch a Youtube vid.

You don't say where you are, which may offer up some solutions as to how to store the pics/vids

I'm in Quebec, it's a pretty posh hotel, hence why I'd expect it to have decent WiFi.

Actually, that's a good point you have there regarding location, it's 11 o'clock at night here near enough, and it seems things have speeded up considerably; it was very slow late this afternoon and eight-ish this evening. I had a look at your ZDnet site, it seems to be more relevant to PCs and didn't mention iPads though I'm not too sure if that's important.

Would you say that there's a danger of choking the thing if I download today's crop and even another thousand before the end of the holiday, and if so, could I recover it?

Hang on, if it's 2300 here it will be 4am where you are, shouldn't you be in bed by now? Oh, wait, forget I said that, right? .

My iPad was the same John, checked the storage space and it was almost full

I released a huge amount of space by deleting Apps and games I never used. That will get you home, then you can always reload those Apps that you find you want, when you've uploaded your photographs to a desktop?

The two customer comments/reviews were less than complimentary, certainly about its ability to work with Apple iOS products

If you are going to resort to that, you would be better off (in your pocket at least) simply uploading the photos to Dropbox or similar. You would need a WiFi connection, but most hotels have one.

With the price of 16-32Gb SD cards being so cheap - I think a dropbox account of similar capacity to 4 cards........ would cost rather a lot in comparison?

For a 1TB account - it is £7.99/month, and a free account of 2GB isn't worthwhile for piccies.

I use both the Seagate Wifi disk (no problems with it) and a Hyperdrive iUSB-port (allows memory stick usage)

True. But I was thinking of it as a temporary measure until he gets home and transfers the photos to a more permanent location (if anything is permanent...)

Had my Seagate (albeit a 1TB model) for a year or two now ... no problems. Put your films on it and watch it on your iPad, upload off your iPad to the Seagate. DropBox fine if you have WiFi but the iPad to Seagate will work wherever you are

I've never had a problem streaming from an HDD formatted on PC - playing on my ipad, and just plugged the drive into my macbook - and works fine?

With a free Google ID and Gmail account you can have Google + and backup of your photos. Presently I have 21835 photo's saved foc and a whole load of video.
Accessible via any tablet, pc or smart phone without taking up memory.
I use a micro sd card in camera, plug into Android tablet and google back it up, android phone backs up direct to the google account as well. No need to carry extra drives.

Flickr offers 1TB of picture storage FREE. I have all my photos on there (only up to 140GB so far!). If travelling, upload daily but if you have a lot of video it make take longer than all night.

Yep. I still have a Flickr account that I still load photo's to, but there are restrictions on how many photo's you can upload daily and the loader isn't that brilliant. I don't have that issue with Google + it just uploads everything.
