presume

you are using the same lead for both? Does it recognise the connection at the base of the phone at all? i.e. does it sync with itunes?

If not try cleaning out the connector (very carefully) at the base of the phone, possibly try blowing it clear with an low pressure airline first. You can get aerosols from the likes of Jessops for camera shutters and lenses
