(sorry - couldn't resist:D)

+ 1..
as for hardwiring audio-wise, I'd buy a basic autocom, will give better sound and is much more versatile

I use an autocom system for audio, plugged into the headphone socket, the helmet speakers are superb for it. As for power, I made up a standard cigarette lighter socket, attached to a fuse and a little plug (the 2 pin type you get on remote control car batteries). Then you can just get an Ipod car charger and plug it in.

I've set up the little 2 pin socket, and a headphone socket so they're just poking out from the seat. That way you can just unplug them and tuck them in when you're not using them. Just make sure you cover them in the rain. The Ipod, charger and cables tuck nicely into my tank bag.

Get a Zumo. This way you will have a phone, and ipod (MP3 player) and a navi in one waterproof and shockproof package. I have three ipods, but wouldn't want one for the bike. Too fragile and small to put into decent use on the road. :rob

Could you please explain? I thought a Zumo was a sat nav. On Thursday I'm having impressions taken for Ultimate Ear monitors. Was then going to buy an ipod, though had assumed that getting mobile to work would be too much expense and hassle.

Why does anyone need three ipods?

The Zumo can play MP3 music vide an SD memory card. Audio can be routed to an autocom/ or crudely to your helmet via a 3.5mm stereo socket. The Zumo has two bluetooth radios. You can sync your phone to one, and an autocom to another (using the autocom bluetooth dongle).

Gonz.

Zumo is a satnav, but also stores MP3 files on an SD card, and can connect to a mobile phone via bluetooth. You get a similar music menu on the Zumo as most MP3 players, with all the same options - search, shuffle, etc. All controlled by a touch screen.

There is a standard audio output so Ultimate monitors will play music, give you navigation instructions, and allow you to hear phone calls. You'd need a separate microphone if you want to talk to people, though. I haven't bothered with this - I'm not fussed about mobile phone connection, but do like the music/sat nav combination.

ultimate headphones....first class best product available ....I would highly recommend them....

iPOD

I have my ipod mounted in an otter box on a ram mount and powered by an autocom. Works really well and i just whack in on shuffle and of you go!!

Hi there, can I ask how the Ipod is powered by the autocom? Would think the output from the ipod is normal headphone lead from top of Iphone/pod???

Ipod isn't powered by the Autocom system.... Mine is plugged into the Autocom via the normal jack lead, but in between I've got one of these

Boostaroo

A small amplifier.. works on 2 AA batteries, and boosts the ipod volume . I wear either moulded or foam earpugs all the time ( on the bike:D) and with the boostaroo I can still listen to the music up to around 80 mph

I use one of these:

Ipod case

A bit pricey but very good quality. I've got it velcro'd to the bars so it can be removed when I'm worried about where my bike is being left...

I started off with an Ipod (lasted best part of two thousand miles) plugged into the autocom - had no problems but occasionally a little quiet; I didn't know at the time about boosting the volume. I've now upgraded the phone (Nokia N95) and play all my mp3's via that, blootoofed to the Autocom, just set to shuffle and off I go. I like to think it calms the riding down, but the reality is prolly different ;). Also means I can take calls etc, though the sat-nav is more of a sat-naff. I won't go off on one there..... Yet. Obviously what I haven't solved is the power to the phone/iPod issue you originally asked about. Ooops. BTW, +1 for Utimate.

With a 15a fused sourced direct from the battery, I then attach it to a multi cigarette lighter plug (standard size and not bmw seque). This way its easy to get original or after market 'car' chargers for your MP3 player or Phone with the right Voltage and Amp rating.
I got a car charger with two USB outputs that runs on a standard Ipod USB cable and a mini USB cable for the Blackberry.
The stereo cables, a 2.5mm 4 pole and a 3.5 mm stereo, all run to an Autocom.

I put everything into a tank bag which simplifies and neatens everything up, besides making it possible to switch bikes.

Note
Using the same power source for the phone and autocom may trip some functions such as voice dial.

Noise suppresors may be a consideration. I don't use this cause you do not need to have your phone and ipod on charge all the time.

Your phone has to be on autoanswer.

You cannot adjust or operate the phone or Ipod when on the go, which is a good thing.

I have pics available on request.

Nothing wrong with Powerlet but check out larger filling stations. A lot have accessories for truckers (Shell mainly I think) which includes DIN to cig lighter socket adapters as many trucks have DIN sockets. A lot cheaper than powerlet and no delivery charge.
