Ireland - Donegal and Antrim coast, hotels, tips & hints

This is an excellent place to stay, in the midst of some great roads and at the foot of Slieve League (Irelands highest sea cliffs).
Traditional Irish pub, good Guinness, good food, music every night and clean comfortable accommodation

When heading north from Leenane a good road to take the R335 passing Lough Doo towards Loiusburgh then onto Westport.

That R335 is a great road
Did it a couple of times last year

Thanks for the tip about the Rusty Mackerel

Get to O’Connells in Ballycastle for the live local music on a Thursday night. Morton’s fish and chips at the Harbour is a must.

for a change then, off to the right before your parking spot, the L1824 Tawnyard onward, left in Drummin at the church continue on the backroad past Croagh Patrick into Louisburgh.

If you have time on your way through Donegal the Atlantic Drive around Rosguill peninsula is worth an hour or two of your time
Several decent eating places in Downings, like the Harbour Bar, and also the Singing Pub in Mevagh (the other side of the hill)

What always gets me on the northern coast is is the colour of the sea. Almost Mediterranean in colour.

This is a useful thread, TY Comrades. I'm hoping to head to Garrison for a few days late next week followed by a few more days near Raphoe now the ankle op. date finally seems to be confirmed. I've done the Donegal leg of the WAW but not so much of the inland stuff. That said I might head east from Raphoe and head to The Sperrins for a bimble around before heading back to Belfast.
I have to say this boycott of P&O is a PITA as it means I can't go into/out of Larne and use the brilliant Curran Court Hotel anymore.

I love Downings and the surrounding area. If my wife comes to her senses and leaves me I'll move there in a shot.

May I recommend the B47 from Strabane, through Plumbridge and on to Draperstown through the Glenelly Valley. It's a great ride and you'll have a smile on you like a donkey eating rhubarb.

Fantastic, thank you. (y)
An appropriate similie too as the reason for my excursion to Raphoe is to visit the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary. https://www.donegaldonkeysanctuary.ie/

Nice viewpoint overlooking Lough Melvin not far from Garrison here
Thank you, I've done the Lough Erne viewpoint many times but never this one so it's on my list. (y)
I'm also hoping to spend a morning/afternoon walking up The Stairway To Heaven, weather permitting.

The wee road with the viewpoint loops round the back of the mountain and comes back down to the shore of Lough Melvin - near Kilough - well worth doing if you have time
