Irish Buying & Selling Subforum

I can see myself clicking on an Irish section out of interest but I'd still look in the main UK section too if I am after something. Most of my bits come from germany now and postage seems reasonable enough from there. So +1 for me.

However I have serious concerns about the Uk prices, we here in Ireland are used to being screwed and shafted by retailers who charge almost double Uk prices for everything from a pair of socks to a TV. An Irish list carries the very real danger that someone over here will pick up a local bargain, it's just not on ruinin our perspective on things.

The regular FS&W works fine for stuff that doesn't weigh too much. I've bought and sold loads of things and the postage isn't too painful.

But for bikes and trailers and other heavy stuff, there's really no way anyone outside of Ireland is likely to be interested. Also, I'm sure a lot of Irish tossers don't check the bike for sale section that often so they miss out on stuff that's nearby.

The alternative that Daithi is proposing (it was all his idea) of having a pointer to the for sale thread from this forum would work too. I mentioned here last week about my serow for sale and got a total of 9 inquiries (all in Ireland). I know it's kinda against the rules but I think otherwise people won't know about a bargain. (btw serow hopefully heading to Cork soon).

Another option is to have a "Collect-only Ireland" (and Collect-only Scotland, Collect-only London, etc) section next to the other for sale section.

That's exakkerly why we turn a blind eye to what you suggest....we understand why it happens and it's intelligent modding by :aidan and Toooned.....

I can also remember several bikes crossing the water after being sold...sure, it may be less attractive to buy from over there because of the VRT but it does and can happen.....but not if it was all stuck away in a seperate forum :nono

Let it be- if it ain't broke, don't fix it :)

good idea

probably a good idea from the cost point of view , even a numpty will see that the potential buyers are many less because the bike is registered irish and a section directed at this smaller group of people has to make sense. As far as fanum wanting to put a mainland section on this might also be a good idea for our continental members in france, germany , spain, etc.

Typical you don't like being under British rule :hide

I was waiting for one of the "big guns" to get it...... ;)

I don't for a second want to come across as being insular or us having the right to be able to buy from the UK but not sell into it. I think maybe what I'm trying to highlight (maybe accessories only) is a method to make people aware that someone local has something they might want. I know the simple answer to this is that everyone should keep an eye on the Buying & Selling section.

Take an accessory I have for sale for example. I have a rear hugger for the 1150 that I'm thinking about flogging. I got it through the site for say £90 or something (can't remember exactly) but in this case I had the opportunity to have it sent to a UK address as I had a pile of accessories coming over. Now for me to sell that for what I bought it for it'll have to be £90 + £20 shipping which probably won't wash with people as I've seen them go cheaper lately. So my options are 1) hope some local sees it 2) sell it for a loss which is probably what will happen as none of us are in this game to make money.

I recently sold a windscreen and as luck would have it, someone in Dublin bought it. Shipping that would have been a nightmare.

As for selling bikes themselves I think there is an arguement here also. On most of the bikes being sold that I've seen there's nearly always somebody jumping in saying how come bikes are so expensive in Ireland and so scaring away any potential buyers. I know if I was selling my bike I'd be like a bastard if someone did that to me.

The last arguement is that not everyone has a paypal account or a credit card. People can trade in cash.

I absolutely 100% understand the arguements against it and that really there shouldn't be a separate forum, but it would be handy. Of course, that and the 400 years of oppression......

If anyone is looking to buy bits and pieces, or even a bike then surely they will be watching the FS&W section anyway?

As I say above, Gary and I will (as we always have done) let FS threads have at least a week in the Ireland forum so that local guys can spot that the items are available. We know that many people read just the Ireland section and maybe not so much of the rest of the site.

That's where Gary and I come in. A quick PM and we will clean up the thread. It is what we are here for after all. :)

Gary and I have always left "bike for sale" threads in the Ireland section sit for a week or so before moving them into the FS&W area. There's no reason why that can't continue to be the case.

i never remember a week i always remember 24 hours or to the end of the day and it got deleted.
If selling in Ireland is in the title then someone really looking for a bike will find it... other people in Europe could claim the same problem as Ireland do we open up bits for them too?

I can understand it would be easier for Irish to spot Irish stuff if it was in the Ireland section.... but if it's titled right in The FS&W section there should be no real problems... other than someone being a bit lazy to look all the posts in the FS&W section:D
And if you're selling stuff make it clear the postage costs to the UK or say in the thread only for sale in Ireland due to high postage costs and if someone wants an item so bad they can contact you and offer to pay the bigger postage cost .

I must admit to wondering if yourself and Aidan had the same time period in mind.:D
Either way if it's acceptable to allow a thread in the Irish section pointing to a post in the FS&W section for a week then that will do me fine. :thumb2

How did it become 400  WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST ?:nenau

Thanks Aidan and Tuned.

Now, click the link below for an example, excellent value. :green gri

Probably a simple solution is to have a paddy rule like the timmy rule....

Especially for s/h bikes....

Vireo bought a quest off me last year, I specifically put in the add, preferably to an Irish tosser, it worked no problem.

And its a great screen :thumb:thumb. I'm in favour of a sub forum for bits and bobs as its easier to sell them locally than post to the UK. Anyone want a white 1150 tank cover for an SE model ? Dublin.

Link to ireland thread

So how does one put a link from buying and selling to the Ireland thread???

So mods - how about even a sticky in this forum for irish items & bikes for sale? If it's crap and doesn't work so be it......

Also if anyone is interested you can set up an RSS feed on the sticky so you get to know when someone lists an item/bike.

I'm in favour of this idea also, mostly because I've still got a spare set of Vario panniers off my late 1200 taking up space in the garage :D plus I really can't be arsed posting them to anywhere as they're too awkward/expensive to ship. I think a sticky in the Ireland section for bits and bobs would be ideal for stuff like that.

- 1. :P

:nenau i dont see the point meself.

One FS+W section means only having to look in one place.

if price / post etc are too high due to location- them it just dont sell.

simple as that.
