At the end of the day it's no different to any other G/S except the graffiti on the tank and the low millage (I mean, if someone scribbled on MY tank I'd clock im' one). This Gaston bloke, just coz he's ridden to Africa a few times doesn't give him the right to go around vandalizing peoples tanks.

Spot on Rob, if anything Kennys is better, I'd be asking if he has the original tank with it as well, cos as you said>>" NO PD tanks" before 1984 and it was '85 before us plebs could buy them

The authentic 1985 PD Bikes came with a certificate from the Dealer. No many, (the certificates), have been kept

I have a PD Bike with the original Gaston Tank, (signature on it), but no certificate.
I had the tank refurbed and they refurbed the signature........luckily I kept photos of the original Tank before it was repainted..the original signatures did not ware well.

As has been said the PD was produced in 1985.........as a few Bikes but also as a kit to upgrade the 80G/S...without the Tank signature
The Tank is still available from BMW in Primer, but I think that the seat and rack are now no longer available.

The genuine PD engine was supposed to have had a higher compression ratio than the normal R80G/S......but I have no idea how you can tell.

Transfer copies of the Gaston signature have been produced, I had a couple which I gave away, (well £5 each), a few years ago

The Bike in the photo has two side panels.......as did the 80G/S..........one was omitted on the PD.......and not with those decals and it clearly lacks the single seat and rack....it is an 80G/S with a PD tank..nothing more or less

I sold my R80GS Basic with both tanks, (i.e with the Kalahari Tank), similar miles, original condition and "as new" as you could get for a 12 year old Bike....for less money and in my view, (and I have had a few of each), the paralever Bike is a better Bike to ride and probably to look at.

My view on valuation would be:

If it was a genuine G/S PD with complete history and that mileage....he may just be able to squeeze that kind of money as there are a few people, not many at that price, who would really want one.......but £6,500 would be nearer the mark

as it is, as a really good 1981 R80G/S.......£5,000 and he would have a few buyers, decreasing rapidly as the price neared £6,000.

At those prices the market is small, but you never know?

I know nowt but I think it would struggle to sell at even 5K. as has been said its a g/s (3000) with a dakar tank(750) recovered g/s seat, not single,(minus a bit), If its really nice then 3500. In my view the mileage is immaterial really. Its low but not low enough to be exceptional, like still in the box. Buy it at 7.5k, ride it and see the highest depreciation this side of a K1200s
