Is an 1150gs much better than a 1100gs?

Hi all, i have had an 1100gs. To be honest i was not impressed. High first gear, clunky gearbox. I know they all do. Bit of surging as it got hotter, and that was after being serviced. Perhaps i should have given it more time.
The question is, was the 1150 a big improvement over the 1100. I am tempted to try another one on your advice people. Price has dropped on all bikes so i may be able to afford one. I remember the 1150 adventure had a different first gear not sure on just the 1150.
Help appreciated

As it is to all intense and purposes the same bike, how much of an improvement are you expecting....

Fantastic bike I thought... The 1100 I mean.... No corrosion on the forks and no real need for a sixth gear IMHO....

Yes 1150 is good

I have never had an 1100 but I have gone back to an 1150 from a 1200 as I prefer the more solid style and they seem better built and less prone to rotting away.

I use the 6th gear all the time as I like to just sit back and cruise in between short spells of going for it. Fuel economy is also important to me and you get less vibes in 6th too. You just have to be aware that not a lot happens when you open it up in 6th so you need to change down.

had em all, and the 1100 is the best of them all

better fuel, better gearing too. the 6th gear is more an overdrive on earlier 1150's and the adventure came with either lower or standard gearing, you cant tell unless you ride it.

get a decent mechanic to sort the 1100 out, and it will be everything you thought it would.

Maybe it's a Yorkshire fireman thing elevensies. DickDastardly has cast an envious eye over my 1150Adv more than once but keeps coming back to the idea that there's no real gain over his 1100. As has been said, properly set up, neither of them should suffer from surging. And neither of us can see how we'd benefit from buying a 1200 apart from being a lot lighter in the wallet department.

Had both 1100 Anv and a 2002 1150 [still with me]
which is best ! well.
If i lived in Wales,Norhumberland,Highlands etc then i would pick the 1100.
But as i don't,the 1150 with it's 6th gear,makes distance travelling easier. Would be my choice [just buying a 2003 1150 GSA]. :)
PS
I prefer the look of the 1150 as well.

Both are fine bikes. If you are looking at 1100s or early 1150s then buy on condition and mileage.

My 1150 is 10 years old and a few bits look tatty because they have corroded. However, it has only done 49k and as Mike at Cardiff Motorrad says, it's good for another 100k because it is simple to fix and doesn't have any complex electronics that will right it off because a replacement costs more than the value of the bike.

You may find a 1100 in a similar condition as they were being sold alongside at the time - the next reg. no in sequence to my bike is a 1100 (W41 PEU) as I've seen it parked at BVM.

Late sorted 1100 will always be better than an early 1150. Just the same with the 1150 to a 1200, BM do let us do some of the beta testing. As has been said the only time the 1150 wins, IMO and experience, with the high 6th gear is doing day long cruising on motorways. IIRC too others have said there's little difference in the fuel consumption between the too, so all the overdrive gear does is reduce the clatter. Which you can't hear anyway because of the tyre / wind noise anyway.

1150's

Don't for get the lower bottom gear on adventures was an option and not std.
Dave GS,

If you didn't like the 1100 despite its "character", I'd guess an 1150 wouldn't change things very much?

My 1150 has a high first gear, clunky gearbox, and is overweight and underpowered. I forgive the flaws because the whole plot works so well despite them. I got bored with my pretty flawless (but to me boring) Honda VFR750.

We're all different. Plenty of bikes out there to like!

high tower my old sausage, its not a fireman thing, its a yorkshire thing :thumb2

chris is always wanting something else, he was over at ours other day, he even fancies my 1200gsa..... fool he is:comfort

Constant bike swapper me, bad habit i know!!

Deffo need a two up hooning tool.

Her who has to be obeyed indoors wants to come along.

She liked the gs for comfort, saying that she didn't go far.
