Bike is a 05 gsa 9,000 mile,s....Oil consumption is around 1lt to 1000 mile :eek:
and has been from new, bike was run in as per hand book :)
But.....
I can see oil weeping out the filler cap thing (OE type :thumb ), also see air bubbles odd time, dont think it,s the o-ring coz it,s been replaced twice as has
the plastic bit it fit into (by dealer) :nenau
always traces of oil around filler area/rockercover..

oil level is fine, checked several times over a 200 mile run, it read half way up the glass and drops as the ride progresses...last check read about a quarter..

So wot I,m trying to say is I did,nt over fill with oil, also no sign of oil when I checked bottom of air box bung....

What would cause this :nenau have I broke it :mmmm

Dealer is aware, and is going to take a look, but I,d like to be a bit more clued up in case bullshit mode is brought into play :rolleyes:

Referring to our conversation after you posted this, mine is same age/mileage and on last weeks trip used at best 0.5 litre and at worst 0.75 litre over 3400 miles of hard riding
So I reckon yours is excessive
 
That's a lot of oil! I had an 1100 that had done 100,000m that used about a quarter of that, and 2 1150's, both 30,000+ miles that used about a liter between oil changes (6000m). All were thrashed mercilessly.

Trick is to find where it's going. If it's burning that much the plugs probably would show signs (either actually oily, or have a fair amount of deposit on them. Check each cylinder to see if they are both the same or one is worse

If there is evidence for oil getting burnt it can be blowing past the piston rings, coming down the valve guides or possibly though a blown head gasket allowing a leak between the head feed oilway and the combustion chamber

If you reckon you get oil/bubbles out of the filler, you may be getting excessive crankcase pressure, possibly caused by combustion gasses leaking past the rings or duff head gasket. You could take the filler cap off and see if you get any signs of bluish smoke coming out of the filler cap. Only do this at tickover though (Unless you want to waterproof the garage ceiling) as even at tickover oil mist will spray out!!!!

However, I'd have thought you'd get more up the breather and into the air-box if this was a problem

Check the crankcase breather isn't blocked or kinked or filled with a family of mice

Can you get a mate to follow you and see if it's smoking from the exhaust? If it is check if it's worse under acceleration or on the overun with a closed throttle.

There is a school of thought that running in too carefully can glaze the piston rings so that they never seal as well as they ought. This is exacerbated by the too early switch to fully synthetic oil. The result can be higher oil consumption. There was a thread I read years ago that linked to the running in of aero engines, basicly you need occasional high pressures in the cylinder during running in to force the rings hard against the bores to stop this glazing happening. (this in not the same as thrashing the pants off it before it's ready though). If the bores are glazed I think the only cure is to hone the cylinders (posh word for precision scratching) and run-in again.

Or you have a leak somewhere!

Or the cat is drinking it.

Don't let the dealer fob you off with bollox like 'it's within the accepted BMW consumption limits'.

Have you overtightened the filler? the small lugs in the plastic bit in the head can break off preventing it from sealing (don't ask how I know :o ) the parts dead cheap and just presses into the rocker box with a sealing ring. Mine had the same symptoms when I shagged mine.

That was my thought. You can easily turn it too much and oil leaks out. Take the seal out and dry it off, then put it back and turn the cap lightly.
 
Mmmm, will check the cap tommorro, can remember thinking how the filler cap was a nice tight fit when dealer changed things lastime (at 6000 mile service)
nextime I topped oil up (200 miles :mmmm ) it was a easy fit... :nenau

I dunno now :confused:

Like JB said "I need a bloody oil tanker following me" :(

Definatily seen oil/air bubbles getting past filler cap.... :eek
 
Just checked filler cap and plastic insert...they look fine :nenau


Where would I look to find the crankcase breather :mmmm
 
The crankcase breather is a black pipe about as thick as a finger that runs from the air-box to the engine. Sorry but I can't remember quite where it connects (and I've got a 1200 now otherwise I'd pop out and look!) but it'll be pretty much buried between the cylinders.

Forgot to say in the last post that in my experience oil consumption becomes significantly less after about 20,000 miles - I shouldn't wait to find out if this holds true of yours though!
