is it my hall sensor

i have a starting problem with my 2003 gsa done all the usual checks cables are seated correctly its getting fuel and spark trys to start but just wont run.
i had a problem with it before and traced it to the block connector from the tank
thought i had it fixed but after leaving the bike in the garage for 2 days it wont start. could it be the hall sensor?

Does it turn over slowly?

Try taking the plugs out and sticking them in the oven and give the battery a decent charge, If it's a lead acid battery check the cells that they have enough electrolyte.

Modern fuel is very unforgiving and old Plugs that get "wet" with it refuse to spark in the combustion chamber! Especially if you go in and start and run the bike for 5 minutes once a week! They run really rich when cold not leaning off the mixture till they're up the temp scale, so the plugs get coated with carbon deposits which is a good insulator

sounds very similar to symptoms I had & turned out to be the hall sensors. Have a look herehttp://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65933&highlight=ignition+sensor for some more clues. Try turning the ignition on and with the bike in gear turn the back wheel or crankshaft by hand (clockwise) and listen for the fuel pump priming when the pistons are at TDC. If it does not prime it points strongly towards the sensors. Give the guru Steptoe a PM with your full symptoms and mileage etc and he will normally come up trumps. I found motobins to be cheapest, if it is the sensor they call it the ignition trigger unit.

Thanks for the replys still wont start, i have taken the battery from my other bike also 1150 gs and also put the jump leads on it, bike cranks away and sounds like it wants to start but just wont catch. i have checked the injectors and it is fueling pulled the plugs and they are very black and sooted up. I have tried turning the wheel with bike in gear the fuel pump comes on at tdc as it should.what do i try next ? i am reluctant to take it to the wmb garage as its 230 miles away.

In all seriousness if you are then that explains the black plugs and corroborates my theory modern petrol is shite! If you opened a container with petrol in it selaed up 20 years ago you could nearly be sure a car would run fine on it rather than you're lucjky to get 6 months out of it now

If you believe it is the sensor,i know you can buy the actual transducers themselves for about a tenner apiece.It's a bit of a fiddle to fit them but the info to do so is either on here or on ADVrider.
Try here and look for the "R259 crank angle sensor".

I have a complete working spare trigger unit in my garage somewhere.
Its not for sale,but if you cover the postage,you could try it for diagnosis if you want.

Have tried changing the plugs still wont start same thing cranking over just wont start.
I have only had this bike for about 3 weeks and the weather has been so crap that i have hardly been out on it the first run i went on i broke down bike just cut out and would not start thought i had it traced to the plug from the fuel pump which is fixed to the frame rhs.
Bike started no prob after giving the plug connections a good clean.
Took the bike for a run the next day and it was fine.
parked it up in the garage went to start it on sunday and my problems started.

a lot of people say that, but i've never found much evidence to support it. on a marginal starting engine in the first place? yes, but my outboard fires up in the spring easy enough. petrol had to be nearly a year old last time.

it'll be it's second birthday soon i'll let you know how i get on

I've just changed the hall sensor in my 1100GS after it packed up and the symptons were exactly the same as described here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132821

Now it runs a lot better than it ever had done, I can only guess that the hall sensor fails and degrades over time before packing up for good, I got the replacement part from motobins as it was the cheapest I could find at the time, I did consider just replacing the sensors but I'm lazy !

Anyway, if you change it at least you know it's new and you can forget about it.

Quite often it's the hall sensor wiring thats the problem anyway.

It hardens with age and the heat and stops carrying the signals.

Hey Rob I didn't realise it had just packed up Apologies for takin the Pish!

Hall sensors are a real pain in the ass to diagnose till they Fail and it won't run anymore
Depends what route ya wanna go down substitute or replace with new

Thanks very much guys for all your help i have bitten the bullet and ordered a new hall sensor, they are not cheap £161.00 from moto bins anyway needs must.
I will let you all know how i get on.

Its a pity, that someone with the neccessary skills on the site, could not recondition them on a exchange basis

Noooooooooooooooooooo Carbon is a conductor, the high voltage will take the path of least resistance ( or most admittance if you are into siemens) so will track through carbon instead of across the gap, hence no spark.

Well thanks a lot guys for all your advice,was indeed the hall sensor ,cost me £163 only took around half an hour to change.Bike started first time its now running well, or at least it seems to be,.went for a quick blast and everything seems fine i will take it for a good run at the weekend.
