Is it ok to thrash 'em!

I have recently bought a 1200gs after many years of sportsbikes, GSXR1100, fireblade, R1, 748sp,TLR, etc. I am used to thrashing my bikes without giving too much thought to mechanical sympathy, knowing that I wont be holding on to it for too long. However, I am keen to keep hold of the big gs as, a) it's great to ride sitting upright and b) my mates on the sportsbikes can't believe how hard it is to 'keep up' on the twisties! The one I have bought has been well looked after and is showing 9500 miles. Now, running around with those sportbikes means that the throttle is to the stop and the revs are 'way up there' for long periods of time! - The dealer said that they can be thrashed all day long and they will still last a lifetime, but I'm not so sure. Does anyone have any previous experience of high mileage gs's? Or should I slow down and act my age!!

Slow down?

Oh no no no no NONONO

Thrash her like she's begging for it - they're not run in till they've got 10,000 on the clock anyway :thumb

If they last that long :dabone thrash her, not trash her

Just keep that oil topped up....then ring the nuts of it.

PS why ride with the power rangers though....you may find riding the torque wave with other GS's and playing on the slippery/rough stuff far more enjoyable (and licence friendly) anyway ;)

Our American friends have an acronym: RILYSI - Ride It Like You Stole It. It helps keep the bike in shape. But like Fanum says, keep an eye on the oil.

Seconded. Otherwise you're missing out a big part of what having a GS is all about.

Kai :dabone

Just ride it - HARD - it loves it.

And you don't have to choose between power rangers or slippers - whatever mood you're in! If you want to annoy power rangers, fine, then go out to find some gravel and shake that booty of the bike.

Keep the oil topped up and twist the throttle as far as it goes (rev limiter is there to save you! ;) )

Is that a cut down standard screen you have there Joker? If so does it reduce wind noise?

Cheers

Not sure I agree with you on that one. Why restrict yourself to company that rides the same bike bit boring I'd say...........might even be accused of being elitest? :)

Lee, it is indeed a cut down standard screen.
Have a look at the thread entitled Lower screen.

Does it reduce wind noise... Hard to tell. I think that the buffeting caused by the standard screen is mainly caused by the foldings on the side. I've removed those and cut it down even more. I could probably have left it a bit higher to get the air stream to go above my head.
I get some buffeting, but at very low speed, say 40mph or something.
I mainly cut it down to get to taste the road a bit, and I like it. I use it with the Tobinators that let a bit of air in underneath and it's mostly fine, not perfect, but quite nice. If you want to ride in still wind, then this isn't a solution for you.

Sorry for the thread hi-jack!

RIDE IT! :D :bounce1 :clap
