is it possible to measure the depth of the oil in the fork leg?

Rather than take the fork leg off and empty then refill with the amount quoted in the manwell. Or is there gubbins in the way? I have a leaky fork seal to replace see.

Unless its done a lot of miles/has got water in it,tip the oil into a jug,replace the seal and refill from the jug.The oil lubricates,not dampens.
Just mind the forks air bleed valve or it may blow the new seal.

Thanks for the response Colban, but on closer inspection you'll spot that i don't want to take the fork leg off Unless there is a drain point i haven't spotted to empty the oil from?

Unless you'd left the seal leaking for months, and have your brake calipers and wheels covered in oil, you won't need to add any oil.
They aren't like conventional forks where the oil acts as damping fluid. There isn't any valves or damping rods etc in the legs. It's basically just to lube the stanchions in the sliders and stop them from seizing/wearing.

It's a simple 10 min job so I'd do it right.

If your anal over it, measure where the level is from the top of the non leaking slider, and compere it with the leaking side.

Oil quantity per leg is 485 cc

Ah,see what you mean.When i replaced my fork oil,i had stripped the front end down to do a few other jobs as well.
There is no fork leg drain plug,so if you do it the Steptoe way,you cant drain the oil and check that exactly 485cc of oil is in there (especially since it has been leaking).
Its not critical so you could just replace the seal as per Steptoe,add a small amount of oil and re-assemble.
Theres nothing in the fork sliders to get in the way should you wish to dip your oil level.

Just done this job myself. I am a mechanical dumkoff. It is a strangely rewarding job. There is a drain plug. take the front wheel out and look up the fork leg. There hides a wee allen bolt. This, sire is what you are looking for.
