Is my bike a Diesel?

I had 10/50 in my 2015 lc for 5 years with no issues at all ridden in all temps everyday of the year over 40000 miles. Much quieter especially when up to temp. My new 2018 will get the same as it’s noisy.

You said wethead at the end of your post so I assumed you meant the LC and yes you can buy a 5/50 but the standard recommendation would be 5/40 .

Yes i can see where my typing leaves some ambiguity ;)

5/50 :) The five part is mmm it's the 50 bit thats more interesting, its the upper viso where it's needed. it may be the wethead can survive with the 40 weight as its got forced cooling,

the 50 could be good.. as an aside "just because it's recommended" , based on what? extensive testing, or a.n other has the contact to supply xx oil in bulk at the lowest bulk price

Thanks again for the responses.
I fully intend to try a ??-W50 oil at the next service..
Anything to help quieten the racket mine makes!

Thanks again,

S

All decent manufacturers do a 5/40 they might pick a brand based on price but not the viscosity......its worth trying the 5/50 its mainly used in racing and quads I think , its harder to obtain / slightly more expensive usually .

I have used this oil manufacturer for years on various bikes and cars (100k plus miles in total) with no bad results.
They do a 5/50 as well which i might try now i own a GS.

I am very happy with 10/40 - slightly better clutch and lower gear action too.

Thats fantastic ....... IF you like putting car oil in a motorcycle engine:blast ..... not such a problem if you are putting a different oil in the gearbox / clutch obviously but you wouldn't want to use that on a motorcycle with a wet clutch.Just saying ;)

Opie oils have a large range OF 5/50 CAR OILS

price wise it isn't to bad

........ see above :P

My 2015 GS sounds like a bag of nails, the bike has done 26,000 mile's. I service the bike myself and have resently done a valve check, all were in the middle of the spec. I use 10W40 Motul full synthetic oil, and ride with ear plugs, the oil helps a little, but the plugs have the biggest impact on the noise.

Phht Stop being pedantic you you know what i meant :)

The days of car and bike oils are in most respects long gone -

I remember putting Magnatec in my NSR gearbox back in the 80's - fecking hell the biking community were jumping off cliff,s

The bike would destroy it's self, The clutch wouldn't bite - it was game over - i'd ruined the bike

Utter bollox, other than a couple of minutes adapting to the now super slippy oil , the bike ran for years with no problems - it was the other oil or lack of that killed it :)

The only requirement for the bike is API SL & JASO M2 As long as it has it no additives eg molybdenum it will be fine which is rich because most oils wont divulge what is in them for trade reasons

lol ( although i cant for the life of me think what coatings are affected by molybdenum)

Youll be telling me next, that Supermarket petrol is a lesser quality to branded forecourt petrol ;)

Ooooh supermarket fuel are you mad ! ;) You did prove my point though as none of those oils are JASO MA2 .....the MA means it’s an oil designed to specifically work in a motorcyle with a wet clutch. It has also has set parameters for the oil to behave in a certain when cold and when hot :thumb .

Ignoring the wet clutch issues , cars usually have bigger sumps, much larger radiators and cooling systems and typically rev to half the speeds of a motorcyle engine so personally I’d rather use an oil specifically designed for this use rather than one designed for a car ;)
