Got an 1150 and on my recent trip to IOM I increased the rear preload in order to take the extra rubbish I take with me. Normally dont pay any attention to how many clicks I have it wound on / off, just use it to get comfortable.

I am approx 16.5st and passenger 12st, using a top box and system panniers. Should the preload be wound all the way to max? I thought I could carry more than that sort of weight and be able to adjust it. There isnt any handling problems at the minute but it sort-of says to me the damping may be on its way out. Thinking of getting Ali luggage which will increase the weight as I can carry more and am wondering whether the standard shock will take it. I have done 28k by the way, and the bike is over 5 years old.

Probably answering my own questions here, but anyway, any advice would be good. What are the best prices roughly for a new shock? Thinking Ohlins around £550 and wilbers £350+? Anybody got any more accurate prices or ideas??

How many miles you done?

I have always had to wind mine up to full preload with a pillion and luggage. When solo I have it wound on about 50% . I'm 14st and she's about 10.5.

Mines done around 27k now but I think the shock is on its way out. She was pogoing like a gud un on holiday with a full load on board and took ages to settle doing when we hit a bump.

hubby ordered a wilbers shock...cos hes a big lad and he carrys all our luggage in metal mules and i don't travel light.............so he opted for a more beefy shock.........cost just over 400.......i have wilbers on my 1200 cos i wanted it lowered......janie

Have you tried turning the damping up? It's the black screw on the side of the rear shock. if its at max and you still aren't getting the back end under control then it probably is knackered.

Maxton shocks are superb and cost less than Ohlins. They are made in Warrington so you could probably call in and collect them.
