I'm looking to buy a guard to protect the oil cooler on a Mk3 1200GSA. Can anyone confirm if one from any year 1200 will fit or have BMW changed the design on the latest bike?
cheers, Spanner

Here`s mine

Here`s mine - to be honest I do make them but I`m very keen not to be a kn*b about it so I aint saying mine is the best/cheapest/horniest - thats up to you. Just as long as you choose the one you like!

Mine is shown fitted to my very own 2010 R1200GSA and to put my `money where my mouth is` the one for sale by iaindoha looks fantastic and is a right bargain.

Are there many instances where an unprotected oil cooler has actually be punctured though:confused:

I've never had serious damage to the oil cooler on any bike let alone one that appears to be already in a safe position as per the GS:nenau

Only one..........

Nope, its a rarity to me but I bet some of the forum members can offer some experiances.

I`ve only seen it happen once but if it does get holed you are about knackered unless you have one of those emergency by pass thingies.

other than that they just look nice and kinda disguise all the flies

New radiator = very expensive

Protector = not alot.

Why take the risk?

Same with headlight protector.

I got caught in a major storm in France last week and the hale stones battered the oil cooler, flattening about 20% of it.
Got a Wunderlich cover to fit now, and wish I'd done it earlier.

My last GS had several stone chips on it, brought a cover for it and now its on my latest GS, well worth the money and good forward planning.

It all depends on which make you buy. I know from experience that some makes specify one part number for the early models and a different one for later models. The early (2004) bikes had a 'bar' above the oil cooler and the latter ones a 'beak'. Not sure when they changed over though. As long as the retailer lists the part for your model year then you shouldn't have a problem. Bought mine for my 2010 model from Sporttouring. Looks great!:JB
