Is the 276c too big for a bike?

Thinking of upgrading my GPS III+ to either a 276c, 2610 or a Quest. Not looking to open the religious wars about which is best, but just really wanted to know that although the 276c screen is really nice, isn't it going to be a bit big to mount to the crossbar?

Anyone got a photo of theirs in place so I can get a feel as to the realtive size?

TIA

Dave

Pauls (BHT) got a 276 on his 1100. A quick search of the Morocco trip pics and here you are;

Here's a pic of one on a Dakar for some sizeing too.

The GPSmap 276C is fine on a bike (at least mine is on a SV1000).

As you say the screen is brilliant and it includes a lot of technical navigation features that the SP2610 does not.
Customing routing prefers and avoids were added in the latest firmare so you do not miss out on anything either.
The 276C also has an rechargeable internal battery.

Only limitation is a maximum 256MB Garmin data card size.

PS thats actually a GPSmap 176C in the photos :)

That does it, I'm sold.

Yeah, I know it's big but the feature set kicks the 2610 into touch for what I want to do. I liked the idea Pan kicked around about plumbing in some extra NMEA devices for temperature etc.

Now that the firmware includes the selective routing etc, it's just the memory stick thing that sucks, and I think I can live with that for now. (Of course when they bring out a version that take s"normal" memory I'll be miffed but such is life.)

Thanks to all for the effort and info,

Dave

Size & weight is practically the same as the 2610, except for the antenna sticking out.

Mounting it to the crossbar is quite possible, but there is a better way of course ;)

2610 on a Migsel mount

Here is my 2610 in place, much more natural place for it. It is easier to read and still be able to see where you are going, found that you have to take your eyes off the road to look at the crossbar mounted versions:eek:

MiGel, is that City Select on your 276c, it looks very colourful, more than that, it looks great, despite the sun.

I've ordered a 276c this morning from Aspid, but I’m waiting until City Select v7 comes out before ordering the Auto kit with 256Mb card. Seems the sensible thing to do; I can’t be bothered with the update CD rigmarole some of us had last year.

Thanks for posting the pictures everyone

Yes, it is a GPSmap 276C.

The brilliant sunlight readable screen is one of the features that attracted me to it.
The downside is that in the shade it appears a little darker than a SP but the backlight takes care of that.

PS a 176/176C has a black stripe with model number at the bottom of the screen and a 276C has it at the top.
276C also has marginally smaller case and buttons but you would only notice it when they are side by side.

BurnieM, I was drawing comparison in the display from my SP3, the 2610 shown and the 276c.
The map shown on the 276c looks much more colourful than the 2610 by quite a bit, looks more like MapPoint mapping, but it can’t be.

Note the 2610 picture was taken in the shade, likely it wouldn’t have come out so well in full sunlight. My SP3 suffers the same problem.

It is worthwhile having a mount like a RAM mount were you can change the angle of the unit.

The GPSmap 276C screen actually looks brighter with the sun directly on it.

The SP2610 screen is 3.3 inches wide by 1.7 inches high
with 305 x 160 pixels

The GPSmap 276C screen is 3.3 inches wide by 2.2 inches high
with 480 x 220 pixels.

ie the GPSmap 276C screen is a little bigger and 50% sharper
