I have a 99 1100GGS imported (and converted from kph) with about 20,000 on both clocks bought from South London Motorcycles last year. The warranty is now up for renewal but it is rather expensive. Is there any consesus on the value of the warranty on such a bike?

many thanks

Tim,

is this an extension to the BMW warranty, or just an aftermarket one?

I'd read the small print very carefully. Specifically, look at the maximum amount per claim (this can be surprisingly low), what is expected of you (usually that you get all the servicing done at that dealer. What is covered and (more crucially) what isn't. What is described as fair wear & tear (clutch plates, brake discs, wheel bearings for instance?).

How much is 'rather expensive'? Remember there are other companies you can buy, what is effectively insurance, from.

BMW (are we allowed to use their letters???)

Thanks Mike,

The Warranty is an extension from BMW and is about £400 (I've left the paperwork at home so can't be more precise) The bike came with it when I bought it from SLM last year but despite one or two problems I've not claimed on it. The figure seemed standard for a number of different BMW bikes on the glossy leaflet then sent me.

The BMW recovery is included but as I have Brittania Rescue who use SOS in London anyway there doesn't do much for me.

I remember the car warranty I had cost me heaps and as you point out almost everything was excluded!

warranty, yeah right

Tim, stick the £400 in your pocket and have a holiday on it. There is very little that can go tits up on your bike that will cost £400, just ride it and deal with problems when they arise.

thanks

Thanks Vern - I'm home now so found the price - it is £328 for the warranty. Maybe I'll spend it on some of your very nice panniers. I saw some so by on an 1150 and stumped the wife by saying "look, some of Vern's!" It took some explaining.....

Save it

I've just had the same dilemma... The warranty on my 1150 was up for renewal in April, but after some dithering I decided £328 was a hell of a lot to pay for just 12 month's cover. My Carol Nash Insurance includes Uk and European breakdown recovery, and if your bikes in good fettle... it's fairly unlikely to pack up in a major way!... I'm doing EXACTLY the same thing as you suggest... I'm gonna 'give' the dosh to Vern.... a vastly superior investment!!

Will
