Is there a car that can replace GSA tarmac thrills?

Had loads of quick cars- got a Merc CLS 350 at the mo`- more of a exec saloon though will do 155mph (restricted )

Buts its no fun.....

My Harley is better for thrills!! Bought it to slow me down and to enjoy life but still have a fireblade and my GS1200.

Honestly though- keep your bike and get a cheap car- I absolutely refuse to take anyone on the back ( tend to remove rear seat anyway ) its far too dangerous.

for them or you?? !!

The Harley I tried was thrilling for sure, but for all the wrong reasons. I couldnt wait to get back on my "boring" Yamaha.

Or get any 2 litre petrol car for a lot less, keep the bike and buy a sports bike. :)

Most folk are scared of the fuel costs but my Renault at 30mpg is only slightly less than the 1.6 Focus we used to have. If I ever need to use it for serious annual mileage, I'll have it gassed and halve the fuel costs.

A car is just a tool for getting from A to B. A bike is about the journey. No car can ever replace that.

MK1 TT 2.0 quattro coupe, cheap these days. A reasonable drive and fine for the bimble for the weekly Asda run. Wind in your hair, then open the window.

Keep the GS as no car can compare to a bike for general Tom foolery

for them or you?? !!

For them- suppose I know the dangers- and have had a few offs- ( mostly on track days and in my younger years )

Would absolutely not want any member of my family to hurt themselves because of my hobby.

Couldnt forgive myself if anything were to happen to them.

I am afraid I dont get it here :eek

Are you talking about replacing a motorcycle by a car , and having the same fun driving it ? :blast :barf

A+ Pogo

Hit something hard and fast in a car and the results is likely to be just as dead as doing it on a bike. The car does give some room for error when not hitting things quite so hard. ;)

But much less likely to result in a fatality as everyone knows.

Thats not the point of the thread is it. The OP wants to know what car might replace the tarmac thrills of his GS but we have had everything suggested from vans to the usual chavmobile - the Subaru. The reality is that very few cars will replace with the same sort of pleasure though rather more will go faster in a straight line, brake quicker and in the right hands corner quicker.

The nearest without a doubt are cars like the Caterfield but the nearest you could live with day to day is the Elise / Exige. If you go more civilised like a Porker then you lose that feeling as you carve up the curves even if you are going near as fast.

I gave up my 1200GS, or to be accurate the KTM990 that followed the 1200GS, under pressure from SWMBO and after trying all the alternatives I fancied, I settled on an Elise with 190bhp. Brilliant car to drive and a lot of fun both on track and on a B road. But its not a bike so I have bought another GS. Mind you I've kept the Elise and so far managed to keep SWMBO as well. :D But she isnt pleased.:wife

Sorted, with a budget of £18K you can have both ...... :thumb2

I don't think so but I'm looking as my other half really doesn't enjoy the bike on safety grounds due to our kids so I want to see if there is a bearable compromise. Has to be quick with wind in your hair option, reliable, safe, have a boot, two or more seats and put a grin on your face. Booked to try a 2005 SLK 55 AMG tomorrow which if nothing else, has a great exhaust note. Z4M is an option but I'm not taken by looks. Audi TT 3.2 cabriolet is a possible but think it may be too refined. Won't spend more than £18k.

I won't part with my GSA easily as I really love it but I'm happy to look.

Any suggestions?

Theres afirm by me www.scoobybits. Co.uk which are doing a 3 seater like the aerial atom it 400, 550 & 750 bhp and build cost £35k. Jason plato and butler henderson had this thing pissing all over the v8 atom at angleseey racetrack and top gear love it but wont have it on the show. Theres videos of it on youtube, if I get chance after work I will tru to find them

Hi

I'd say Caterham, Caterham, or maybe a Caterham (having had 3 in increasing outputs :D)

You can of course only go as fast as the car in front if you can't overtake. But,

The huge difference with this car over pretty much any other is removing the windscreen. Then you get to experience so much of what is around you that putting a lid on and getting on a bike is a step backwards. Like going from a 12" portable TV to a 70" whoppa with surround, maybe flames too depending on the injection system :) Decent sunnies required though.

I had two normal sized ones, and did many 2 up camping trips mainly to France. Some compromise required. The last one was a wider body which is I think only 3" longer and wider but frees up much more space for stuff. Luxury!

A friend had an Elise and I would agree its hard to get out of with the fat sills, but thats not the case on a 7. Roof on it does need a twist to get in or out, but if you take a lid and waterproofs for when it rains no worries.

The screen is held on with 4 bolts, an aeroscreen bolts on instead, so if SWMBO insists swapping is easy.

I'm sure most here will say it would be daft without a lid anyway, or its too small/cramped/dangerous etc etc, but I would encourage anyone to go to one of the few dealers and get a demo, or find someone with one and go for a ride, even just the once. Mucho fun :thumb2

Cheap running costs too for most models

And one of my best moments driving a 2CV was overtaking a 7 on a bend. Earth banks at the sides of the road meant I could see and he couldn't but the look on his face as I went by was priceless!

Very comfy as well ..... fitted by the previous owner during the short 12 months he owned it, along with a whole load of other expense he lavished on it!

replacement...

Ideal set-up, GS/Caterham:D Going that way myself.

If you want thrills, try a V8 converted Series 1 on X-ply's  It'll go like blazes but stopping it or cornering takes balls. Or a wall.

Fluff.
