Is there a trick to getting the rear tire off the rim?

To break the bead.
You'll get all sorts of advise from folk who've never actually done it using the sidestand off another bike, plank of wood and a car even a spade.

But yes using small tyre levers close together you can do it, technique I suppose or just getting the knack:thumb

Getting the tyre off the rim on a GS can be done by hand.

if I have to do it I use a bottle jack to break the bead, then some form of lube washing up liquid is good even orange juice will do.

tyre levers and swearing does the rest

it's a good thing to have a go at for everything else there's the AA...:augie

I use a bench vise to brake the bead (use cardboard to protect the rim) and tyrelevers mind the sensors if u have tpc jjh

Apart from the obvious like tyre lever,s, n some method of breaking the bead....

I,ve found a large swear box and a cat to kick help,s :thumb:D:D

to all you pc fekers I wos only kidding about the swear box....

Thanks,

I used a "C" clamp to break the bead, but I just can't the tire lever tools under the lip of the tire, to pry it over the rim. Is that were the lube helps? I am tearing off bit's of rubber though.

Make sure the opposite side of the tyre is in the well, ie. the middle of the rim

Try practicing on the front tyre first, it's altogether easier but the principles are the same.

The tools I use are:

  • Valve insert removal tool
  • Rim protectors
  • Tyre levers (I have two, a third would make life easier)
  • Some lubricant (WD40, washing up liquid etc etc)
  • A rubber hammer
  • A do-hickey to stop the tyre popping off the rim when reinstalling (picture below)

For both removing and reinstalling, it's essential to get BOTH sides of the tyre rim into the well of the wheel for as much of the circumference as possible. Only lube those parts of the tyre that need it. Use the rubber hammer (sparingly) to help the tyre on the final part of the rim. Make sure that you have lengths of string attached to your rim-protectors.

If you have to use a lot of force, you're doing it wrong.

as others have said, its because the tyre is not in the well of the wheel, it will come out of the well at any oppertunity, use a couple of c clamps to pinch the tyre opposite where you insert the tyre lever, so it stays in the well, use some soapy water as a lube around the rim, should come off :thumb2

I've got the perfect tool for tyre removal and replacement. Its called a £10 note. Just hand it to the local tyre shop. Job done.:augie

You end up with balanced wheels as well:clap
