Is there really not an easy way how to reset the service indicator?

Apologies in advance for bringing this well discussed topic again. My local bike garage which charged me £130 for annual service last year is asking £160 this year, claiming "you know, the reset of the service indicator requires quite a bit work on computer". :blast.
I keep asking myself, am I really that desperate to pay money for someone removing blinking service message? As the indicator status does not mean anything more that a reminder, I guess the reset is not worth the money.

I got a similar issue with my BMW car and I got a cable from ebay allowing me to reset various service indicators. Interestingly, what I discovered afterwards is, that you can enter a "service menu" wihout having the cable at all. It just required particular sequence of actions (press brake pedal when starting, holding certain button for 10s etc). - it is all on youtube

I have tried some of these things on my bike, but no success. I guess if someone would have known of a back door to a service menu, it would have been shared here already.

So, my fellow tossers, is the GS 911 really the only way? And those of you who have the GS 911, is it worth the money? Are you using it often for other things than service indicator reset?

I changed the battery on my bike a few months ago, as usual the 'service' comes up. Left it for a few months more til it was actually due a service! I took mine to Williams BMW a year ago when again I'd disconnected the battery and asked them to just get rid of the service message. They did, for free, and it took a few minutes. Well, the time it took me to blag a brew. If anyone tries to charge you to get rid of a bloody message, look him in the eye and say ''I'll be back''. Then come back with a minigun.....
Just saying! :)

Borrow a GS911, or buy a local tosser a bacon butty and connect it up outside the cafe for ten mins.

Then (this is the important bit) once you've rest the service indicator, set the NEXT date to 2025, or to occur in 50K miles :thumb2

be careful - Unless you have the professional version re-setting the service indicator uses up one of the 10 vin numbers you're allowed.

Back to the original post. the garage is ripping you off for charging £30 on top of the service for setting the indicator. If the diagnostic is already plugged in ( as it should be if they're charging you for a "proper" service), then to reset the service indicator takes 20 seconds.

Thank you for the response, folks. Setting the service countdown to 2025 and lot of miles is actually quite a good idea. I'll see is I find somebody with GS911 around.

Yes, the garage is trying to rip me off. I was reasonable happy with them before, but I feel that they are trying to push the prices to far.
From the local bike shops these guys are the only ones who know how to do the indicator reset. And they (or the manager) tries to sell it as "premium service" which is unacceptable. This should be (as you rightly note) part of general service procedure. Other garages can do the service, but do not have the means to reset the indicator.

If they will do it for the right price (free), I'll service with them, otherwise they lost one customer.
