The gearlever return spring on my 100GS is a bit weak but it's been like it for some time. More recently I've noticed that I have to more often than not do a double change (lift up, release and lift again) to engage second from first. I think this may have been going on a while now but I've only started to notice it after riding other bikes with slicker gear shifts a lot. Same applies to the brake - I knew it was crap, but now I'm out of the habit of breaking a week before I should need to, it's positively dangerous/

Do I just live with it or should I service the box before it inevitably self destructs?

Far easier to do it as a planned job than have it fail at an inconvenient time.

Is the linkage free and lubed?

I recon its a sign that the linkage and lever pivot need a clean and grease :thumb2 (there is a bush in the lever pivot)

The linkage and bush are in good order. I've had to shorten the gearlever a bit to suit my big feet and it has roller end fitted.

I had the same problem when I bought mine. Solved it by adjusting the clutch cable and position of the shifter.
