Replacing a HP Pavillion 710 which is maxed-out with 512k of RAM onboard


I'm finding the prospect of changing over quite daunting, particularly with respect to Garmin software registration and stuff....

Is there an easy way to smooth the transition for someone with limited PC skills?

There are 2 ways to get your Mapsource up and running on the new PC, both fairly easy.
On your old PC, search for files ending in .gma, so using windows search enter '*.gma' (leave out the ' ').
These are the unlock files for your maps and may be in a folder like: ..AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Maps\ (it depends on your OS to the entire path, XP is different to Vista and Win 7), but as long as it is along those lines you will be Ok.
Copy the files to floppy or USB, they are very small, or you could email them to yourself.

Your new PC should have Windows 7, install Mapsource first, then copy the above GMA files into:

C:\Users\'your user name here'\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Maps

Your maps should now be unlocked.


The 2nd way is, once you have installed Mapsource, call Garmin support and they will email you a .gma file and instructions to unlock your maps.

Start Mapsource on the old PC goto Manage map products, in the box that pops up
click on the tab that says Unlock regions this will list the maps that are unlocked on your system
highlight the maps you want to keep and either use the export button to export a small file called unlock code file (ucx) or select properties for each of the maps and note on good old fashoined paper the unlock code that will show up

install Mapsource/Maps on the new PC and enter the unlock codes or ucx file the Mapsource wizard will tell you the procedure to follow

Also I believe places like PC world will do transfer function of data from old machine to new, just remember to remove your porn first
