Get the bike to Steptoe and get it checked ASAP, take it from me you don't want to experience a failing drive shaft UJ at 120km. A faulty ABS you can live with. The rear drive / drive shaft you won't

I did mine in the back garden,

Torque wrenches are cheap
it only becomes a problem when you dont have the parts
but if i recall it's just couple of nuts and bolts
you'll need the correct grease, some FD oil, (makes sense if your dropping the FD )
if the boots are shot then you'll need to order a new one or two

If any sort of maintenance other than simple tasks like oils and tyre pressures are outside of your comfort zone, then I would not recommend tackling a task like this unless you like a challenge.
However, I would suggest you take it to someone like Steptoe, who can at least assess what needs doing to make the bike safe. You may well have caught it in time, and just a clean of the corrosion and lube, with a new gaiter will put the bike right. But you should know that any damage isn’t going to fix itself and will only get worse.
I'm not sure where you took the bike, but...if they were struggling with this rear wheel, on this bike, I can't really guess what was going on

) and your responses, there's only two possibilities:1. You're a troll having a laugh
2. You should get the bike to Mikey Boy or Steptoe - pronto!
Riding it as is, has a timer running on it - something at that end of the bike is going to go wrong, whether you keep riding it or don't ride it!

(i seem to remember the garage struggled to get the wheel in/out, when fitting a new tyre, due to the width of the tyre, ie not much clearance)

They should have removed the silencer first to create the necessary clearance. Nuts and bolts, simple stuff.

Mine failed whilst filtering between lanes 2 and 3 of the M25 on a wet and windy rush hour - the shaft sized and locked the back wheel. Trust me, you don't want to be in the same position.
Thankfully, the Polish arctic driver in lane one had his wits about him and avoided hitting me.
I can, but as I said not while you wait and not this week. I might have a day next week but had a couple of awkward jobs the last few days so everything is getting shunted back and the free slots are getting lost… if you get what I mean
Seeing as I haven’t given any price/cost for this job that’s a bit of a stupid thing to say

I figured there had to be more to the story than your simple one liner.
I think you are being disingenuous. There aren’t many bike mechanics that can or would drop what ever work they had on to look at your bike. Quite rightly they would expect you to book the bike in with them so they can inspect the bike and assess the repair work required.
