After some guidance here folks. I bought my 15 plate TE from a BMW dealer via telephone/email delivered to my house about a month ago. Cleaned it for the first time after a ride this morning and came across what you see in the pics below. Any thoughts on wether this is the dreaded corrosion I've heard so much about and if so what should I do? Or am I worrying about nothing? If you think I am being over cautious I do have grounds for it in that after the bike was delivered I discovered that all of the bolts holding the engine guard on were loose, not a major issue I know but makes you wonder whether the proper checks have been done.

Does wit wipe off with a damp rag if it does its not corrosion, if it does not wipe off it will more than likely be corrosion ?

I knew the answer but just wanted confirmation that this is the issue under which BMW have been changing engines.

Ok so what do I do about this now, having bought the bike via telephone form a BMW dealer in the south (I live in the North). Have I got some come back on this?

if you buy a bike over the phone then that a risk you take.did you have photos of the bike....what was the description...did they mention any good/bad points to you...
personally if im spending lots of money id rather test ride and inspect it first...if not then you take your chances.have you bought the bike to ride it or look at it....
if your going to keep it for many years then i wouldnt worry but if you intend on selling it after a while then the next buyer might not be happy with that corrosion...

Even if pre-owned, and brought from a BMW Dealer, this is an engine corrosion issue and dealer will replace. Congratulations in advance for a new engine.

Probably not if it's pre owned. Bikes are sold as seen under the buyer beware policy.

I bought my bike second hand from a dealer. A year later I noticed corrosion starting, I complained and got a new engine :)

My understanding was that corrosion claims were more likely to be agreed if the bike was under two years old regardless of whether the owner bought it new or used.

Obviously some customers have been treated well outside of the 2 year time frame but really the bikes shouldn't be corroding like this in the first place so BMW ought to show some goodwill.

Yes I did have photos but not showing this level of detail. With regards to 'known issues', they said nothing and very much doubt a BMW frachised dealer would be allowed to sell a bike with a 2 year warranty with Known issues.

Surely this would have come up on the PDI particularly as it is a know issue for BMW???

I genuinely hope that they treat you sympathetically but at the end of the day they are in business to make money.

I have never known a motor trader point out any faults or blemishes and when I have pointed out faults the usual reply is " that's why it's that price, it's not brand new"

Maybe franchised dealers shouldn't sell on bikes with known problems................ but they often do. Believe me, I have been there.

Then, if you let your consumer rights pass with the passage of time, you are left to pick up the issues through BMW warranty. Fine if the parts are available & the problem can be fixed quickly, but mine took all summer to sort out - I was fuming. Ok, it seems likely that you will be offered a new engine. Just make sure it can be made to happen in a timely manner, otherwise reject the bike.

Bollox......I hope I get better treatment particularly as I'm off to the TT in a few weeks. Don't know much about consumer rights and passage of time so I'll have to do a bit of reading up.

Maybe I should take it to my local dealer for an opinion and get the old 'well you should've bought one from us' craic

Contact the dealer ASAP, especially if the bike is still under two years old.

I'm ex motor trade and can assure you that being polite but firm gets you further than shouting and screaming.

Customers who were abusive were called 'ruckers' and were treated with contempt, most people in a dealership are more inclined to go the extra mile for a genuine customer who has good reason to complain.

Thanks for the advice, the bike is 'just' 2 years old, first reg 28/04/15. They are a large and reputable dealers so I'm hoping they will do the honourable thing and arrange for it to be sorted.

Im considering a new gsa (black coated motor etc).... are these any less susceptible to corrosion?
