I was being told that, if you get caught on dash board camera and a complaint is made that you rode too close to another road user the police will look to prosecute the rider....?

which raised the question in my head, how close is too close and how on earth would they work it out..? I can grasp the idea of knowing the camera lens and technical spec and having some simple measurements it would be possible to work it all out... but really I just can't see "the man" being overly impressed having to do all that leg work to get a collar..?

does the collective know more..? or was matey trying to pull my leg..?

Driving too close will require more work. Using fixed points in the frames that can give a known distance. Speeds can be worked out using marks in the road, white lines etc once they have a timing on the film and a frame rate, but the cost isn't cheap and certainly wouldn't be done in a minor case. Would need something with a bit of gravitas, injury, damage, serious offence etc

I believe a lot of cyclists submit film of vehicles passing too close, how many are followed up in any way, who knows.
If a warning letter is sent out then it's a positive result for the issuer whether the driver accepts it or not

I think your standard of riding/driving would have to be exceptionally poor for any investigation to take place.

I can say, insider knowledge, that one of the reasons is lack of staff to view the videos. This was always going to happen as submissions increased. However, even something that looks minor could lead to other things like no licence no insurance etc,with no investigation we’ll never know.

PS .. sending in clips of video and dash cam from whining cyclists who bitch about cars getting too close and dangerous will often result in "letters of advice" because "proving" it realistically for a court of law is a very different matter both in Police time effort and resources. Then of course one has to ask is it in the public interest to prosecute a motorist in those circumstances when there has been no collision and the courts are busy dealing with offenders who have been released from prison a million years too early.

Been done quite a few times - time over distance.....physics don't lie
There was a guy, ex Navy Tech, who was able to get speeds from footage and present his workings as an expert witness at Crown Court...lot of work but rock solid evidence

This one was defended by an equally expert witness for the defence but they lost. He was lucky not to go to jail said the judge

At the time he had uploaded quite a few you tube videos of him hairing about Cheshire & N Wales in the atom

He didn't lose the car as it 'registered to his wife'. He had sold the car and the new owner was supposed to be collecting it but Cheshire Police seized the car and had for around 12 months

All the videos mysteriously disappeared off the net the day she got postal notices

A friend of mine submitted some video footage online to North Yorkshire Police showing two offences, one being a slam dunk double white line offence. He heard nothing back for ages so he contacted them. He rang me saying ‘mate, they’ve done nowt, said they don’t have the staff’. My first thought was a NIP was required and it got timed out, and binned.

They don’t even need to go looking for their own offences now, they get handed them on a plate, and still do fuck all about them !

My son’s girlfriend’s dad recently got prosecuted for riding too close and too fast past a peddly bike in his car. The complaint and video DIDNT come from the cyclist but from a following motorist.
