recently ive noticed a low down rumbling noise and i can feel it through the seat and i cant just place where its coming from (its not falling to bits it could just be my paranoia) In trying to find out where its coming from ive been looking around the rear hub and thought it looked 'odd'

i have attached some pics to better explain what i mean - should the hub be in a line with the shaft? mine seems to be turned up so the rubber gasket is squashed on the top and stretched at the bottom.

so is this normal or is it fubard or do they move sometimes?:nenau

as usual any help will be gratefully recieved :bow

Its a 2002 R1150GSA 46K mls

Looks like your paralever bearings have collapsed!

If so you'll need to replace both pinions as well as the bearings.

Pinions No. 6 + 7 on the top drawing

bearings No.2 x2 second drawing

Of course it may be something else such as No. 5 on the bottom drawing but if you remove one of the pinions you'll soon find out:thumb

well i think that may well be the cause of the grumbling noise! i suppose that serves me right for have a couple of play days in the sun!

You have got to be joking!

Mine looks exactly like this! I assumed it was normal?

could this be the cause of the "gearbox" whine I have been worrying about? Roll on Steptoe, my visit can't come quick enough.

yep a whine noise is a better description than a grumble - a sort of strained gear kinda sound?

Thats it, almost like a quiet version of a car reversing. The worrying thing is that my gearbox oil was also minging and is taking ages to flush out! Fingers crOssed its not a double issue!

Could be your shaft drive bearings. Don't ask for technical details because I have to pay mechanics for that kind of thing but your description sounds a bit like my old 1100GS when the bearings began to go during a month long trip in France. The vibrations/sound became a bit crunchy feeling/sounding after a while but only slightly intrusive while riding - always on my mind but not enough to make me stop. I travelled a further 3000 miles before I got the bike to a dealer in the UK who diagnosed and sorted the problem.

That wouldn't effect the position or angle of the final drive.
Only the paralever bearings or the torque arm can effect the position/angle.

can any of you advise me how the inner pivot bolt undoes? do i loosen the bigger outer nut first or do i just take out the inner bolt or both at same time?
