New to gs so o easy on me please. Bike on centre stand and started it up to let it tick over for a few mins and put it into gear then let clutch out. Seems to be a bit of a rattle coming from the shaft where it leaves the gearbox. Now i know the shaft is sitting low because its on centre stand but is the clunk/rattle noise normal. Ps bike rides fine when on the road. Would be interesting if anyone else has noticed this as well.

Thank goodness for that lol. I dont intent to do it again, thanks for the reassurance

I think I'm right in saying that running the bike on it's centre stand puts undue stress on the shaft and its coupling joints (because as you say, the shaft is sagging down..).
I've read a few threads on here where the mechanics of the forum are saying 'don't do it' .. :thumb2

The shaft has a UJ or Universal Joint at either end. Like ol' style propshafts on trucks and 70's Ford Escorts. They're not CV constant velocity joints like in your new fwd car.
So when the shaft is all the way down and the joints have to change the drive through two angles, the constant motion at the gearbox end changes to rather fast-slow-fast-slow movement. Therefore, a jerky rear wheel and the thrashing back and forth knocks hell out the splines and joints.

Think about what happens when you jump that hump backed bridge...

I'm no mechanic but if there's no load through the drivetrain can this really do any damage ? Aren't these bikes designed for off road use :blast

Why would anyone want to run the bike on the stand with the back wheel spinning?

Get on the bike, start it, ride away. Anything else is causing undue stress both from ticking over and running it cold.

AFAIK, clutch rattle is normal. If not my bike is fecked.

Ah - no load. Exactly. When it's under load, the backlash does not manifest itself. Everything is going well. Put it into gear when the motor's off and you'll see the amount of backlash present. It's just not a good idea to have it in gear, running and on the stand. As mentioned - why would you.

Designed for off road? Off-road or off-the-road? :D

Two thoughts chased each other through my brain as I read that …

  1. What kind of twat would jump something when he can't see the other side?
  2. You mean that's bad for the bike? I'd best stop doing it ...

:angel

plenty of little hump back bridges were I live, that I can see the road ahead. Such fun...:thumb
