MOTORRAD
https://www.motorradonline.de/enduro/neue-bmw-r-12-g-s-die-retro-enduro-kommt-am-27-maerz-2025/ had already shown spy photos of the new retro GS in summer 2021 (see the photo gallery above). And in March 2024, BMW Motorrad CEO Markus Flasch personally confirmed that it was coming.
BMW R 12 G/S: Presentation on March 27, 2025
Now, one year later, on March 24, 2025, the first official teaser images have appeared. Along with the model name: It will be called
the BMW R 12 G/S, with a slash, like the legendary original R 80 G/S from 1980. Bayerische Motoren Werke has also announced the exact date for the presentation of the new R 12 G/S: Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 5 p.m.
Technical data is already available to MOTORRAD
Although technical data for the new BMW R 12 G/S are not yet officially available, MOTORRAD published the key data, which was leaked via convoluted channels, back in November 2024.
Air-oil-cooled boxer engine with 1,170 cc and 109 hp
Accordingly, the BMW R 12 G/S will feature the 1,170 cc, air-oil-cooled, double-overhead camshaft (DOHC) twin-cylinder boxer engine, with the same Euro 5+ tuning as the R 12 nineT. This means 109 hp peak power, 115 Nm of maximum torque, and a 6-speed transmission. A claimed top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph) should be fast enough for a retro enduro.
229 kilograms light retro enduro
Especially since the BMW R 12 G/S will likely be relatively light for a 1200cc boxer enduro with a cardan shaft. A preliminary weight of 229 kilograms has been leaked, ready to ride with basic equipment and a 90 percent full 15.5-liter fuel tank.
21-inch front wheel and long suspension travel
The new BMW R 12 G/S, with its 21-inch front wheel, is a proper, fully off-road capable enduro. The rear wheel format is still unclear – either 17 or 18 inches. In any case, BMW's typical tubeless cross-spoke wheels are expected. The upside-down fork and Paralever single-sided swing arm with central spring strut are apparently designed for at least 200 millimeters of travel front and rear. This reportedly results in a seat height of 860 millimeters.
Reduced basic equipment
The (basic) equipment of the BMW R 12 G/S is slimmed down, in keeping with its concept. As a retro enduro, it will likely only be equipped with the most necessary modern features from the factory, such as ABS (probably partially deactivated for off-road use). However, additional options such as a gearshift assistant or tire pressure indicators will likely be available to its future owners.
Highly anticipated price of the BMW R 12 G/S
Accordingly, the BMW R 12 G/S shouldn't be too prohibitively expensive. At least by BMW standards. One indication is the current price for the R 12 nineT: starting at €17,410. We'll know that for sure on March 27 at 5 p.m.
