A bloke rang me tonight with an 83 R80G/S and an 83 R80ST for sale, roughly 4400 quid for both.(Now I believe in Santa :D) For me this would be a nice addition to my R100GSPD, R80G/SPD & R100GS Bumblebee, giving me a set of BM off roaders -useable investments. Not advertised anywhere so I don't have to jump quickly.

Can you astute BM owners help me with the following:

The R80G/S has an extended swingarm, is this a good or bad thing? Can be returned to original with little effort by the look of it.

Is having a GS/ST collection more valuable than having a couple of an individual model eg 3 R100GSPDs ?

The ST comes with plenty of parts that the owner thinks are specific to ST, would that be the case or is there general cross over between the ST and the G/S?

This call comes just after I have purchased an R75/6 and an R65 from a local wanted add I ran. I had pretty much given up on getting a G/S or an ST.

My initial reaction is that I would happily resell the R75/6 and R65 to get the other 2. Storage space is becoming an issue and as much as I love em I don't want to have a zillion dollars tied up in BMs.

Your input in the form of considered comments, unsolicited abuse and bizarre comments will be greatly appreciated :D

Reaction from the dinner table tonight was the usual eye rolling :rolleyes:, glazed stares :mmmm and "what's for desert?"

Hope to have some pics sent to me tomorrow.

Returning the bike to original is pretty straight forward, pick up a used rear swing arm and drive shaft and your sorted. Having said that an extended swing arm would not be a cheap option so you would be quids in on that I'd say.

On the parts front mechanically the bikes used pretty much the same parts apart from wheels tanks etc.

Personally I'd prefer having different bikes in a collection rather than 3 of the same, but thats just my view, you got to decide for yourself. :D

Post pics of the swing arm please :drool

OK. you must have a Gollywog stamped on your ass, you are so fecking Jammy !!!:green gri
£400 for whichever one you don't want...
If you pay your £12,[ Motomartian or whatever he's called now will tell you how to pay from Australia] I could pm you with links etc..
Lots of diffs twixt st and g/s.
Less st's about because a lot have been made into "lookalikey" g/s's
s/t is a marvelous bike to ride, possibly best handling airhead that BMW made..

Thanks Proff

Am expecting pics of both bikes today and will post a couple.

12 quid  that's a weeks pay down here. :D Will look into it.

Being lucky is a product of using wanted adds on club sites and in the media, although when this bloke rang re the R80G/S I never suspected that he had an ST for sale too. When the conversation on BMs went that way my thoughts were "Shit", how good is this!!"

Am re evaluating my stance on the whole Santa thing now :D

These are pics I have so far. And yes I know the black snake around the wheel of the ST will affect the steering :D :D

My overall impression is they both need a bit of work but they are rareish bikes (in Oz) that are available. I reckon someone will ring tonight with a load of rocking horse shit for sale

The ST needs a few easy jobs done -speedo needle, trip meter, front disc. The G/S needs a tidy up, some undenting (?) and a coat of paint. It is mechanically good with a top end rebuild and new bearing shells in the last 20K kms.

I'll swap you a completely standard back end for that "horrid" extended "bodged" twin shock piece of crap:augie:augie
I'll even rebearing my one and include a NEW rear standard suspension unit and pay postage both ways, just because I'm such a nice guy :D..

:drool:drool:drool:drool:drool

Do you blokes see an advantage in running an extra shock on the rear? To my mind replacing the original with an Ohlins or WP would be a better solution. BTW I think the extra shock is off a Mini Moke. :eek

Has anyone ridden a G/S with an extended swing arm -any good?

Check Wreford Miles's posts :augie:augie

or look on HPN works bikes :drool:drool:drool
Sometimes I wish I had a jury shock like that, two up over green lanes and I wouldn't bottom out at all :bounce1
Mini Moke shock :) I'd be interested if it's a front or rear one.....
NAHH Bugger it, I'll reiterate my offer of a standard arse end in exchange :thumb2

Best you come and have a look before you committ Proff :D Are you any good at fighting bushfires? It's a bit iffy round here at the moment.

how strange and interesting :eek (wel I certainly have not seen such a setup, I like it though), do you know if the second shock has a spring inside it? or is it only damping/rebound??

I reckon it's only a shock absorber, no spring -but having said that I didn't know Mini Mokes even had suspension :D

Still not sure why you would do this

Mini Moke's are a utility version of the original Mini, designed for and tested by the military services in the late sixties with the idea of substituting it for some of the roles of the Land Rover and the Rolls Royce Jeep type vehicle, the model name I can't remember (possibly Gemini?) :nenau

Unfortunately for the makers (probably British Layland) it was next to useless off-road, and therefore no good to the Military in the long run.

However; thanks to the Hippie culture of the time and the popularity of a similar French vehicle with a 2CV engine, the Mini Moke became quite popular throughout the western world including Australia.

The underneath of the Mini Moke is basically the same sub-frames and suspension as a conventional Mini.

It's interesting to see such a conversion, though being in Australia it would make sence to be done for a traveler (possibly two up) to have an uprated rear end.
