its a bit sick

hi guys a bit of advice please,my gs12 ,o5 plate 13500miles ,has started to run like a loppy dog,took the plugs out ,the left one is perfect colour,but the right one is all sooted up,it struggles to tick over jumping all over the place ,normal riding it seams to hold back a bit ,the exhaust tone just doesnt sound right to like a fluffing ,oh i have checked i have a good spark on all four plugs,whitch leads me to suspect an oxygen sensor on that side ,any advice please.

With the prior history of the GS especially mine that dropped a valve on that side I'd be slipping the rocker cover off and checking that you haven't got a tight valve!

Sooting Yes Mine also required a Lamda probe on the right side OZA630-BM1 after it was rebuilt

Lambda Sensor, Throttle Position Sensor or coil packs/leads on that side maybe?

i did think about coil packs ,but i have a very strong spark on all plugs ,surelly it couldnt be a valve with 13500 miles on ,could it.

Sounds like a fuelling issue, so start looking in that direction first.
Then check as the other have suggested.

Flog it quick don't let the mileage put you off check the valves they have been known to go at lower mileages than this. Chap I mnew had an almost new one that went pop (or probably a f.. big bang!) during his advanced test! new engine under warranty.

Try swapping lambda probes left/right and see if the sooting up changes sides. My money's on the lambda probes.

yeh just done that an hour ago ,then done a quick blast up the motorway ,now the otherside is all sooted up,i quess it must be the lamba/oxygen sensor .

Lambda probes expensive from BMW, when I had the same fault I bought an OEM item (NGK/NTK) part from an eBay seller for £68.

Same part inside but the cardboard box it comes in is free, not £40 for the logo printed on it.

I had same problems, try giving the probe a good clean, Wd40, contact cleaner etc. The book says they cannot be cleaned, but mine seems to be OK after a clean.

The only definitive way to test a Lambda is to measure its output using suitable test equipment such as a GS911 which I'm lucky enough to own. It should show a saw tooth curve, and will also say if the Lambda heater is faulty, which mine was.

Theres nothing to lose by trying to clean the sensor, although I am skeptical that it will improve anything. Normally when they fail, they're fecked.
