It's a crying shame ....

I believe it's £15,999, and that's without luggage.

On the subject of chains, I can't get my scottoiler to work consistently. It either bungs out too much or not enough. Even with minimal flow, it flings oil over the rear cylinder and shock. You have to turn it up if it rains, but I always forget, so the chain goes rusty.

It's on borrowed time.

My mate who wooed Amanda on his R has had exactly the same issue, IIRC the borrowed time has now run out.

Give mine a wipe with a WD40 coated rag to clean and then a judicious amount of spray lube on the inside run once a week. Chain always clean and take 2-3 mins to do :)

the R is with the 21" front and more suspension travel. Ie , not so great on-road , very good off-road.

if your riding is 100% on-road ... ok , you get the idea

KTM's marketing is very slick too ya , Ready-To-Race , etc , but over here , the dealer support is very weak and these 1190/1290 machines are no more like their 990/950s. The bikes are chock full of electronics and without a strong dealer support network , ownership may become very frustrating.

the R has a different warranty period as well. Beware

Utter bollocks.

Most tests have concluded that the 1190R handles better on road than the standard 1190 !!

My 950SE has a 21" front and the handling is fantastic,as was my Adventure 950S a while back.

Sounds to me like you haven't ridden one........

Over here the R has the same 2 year warranty as the vanilla, why wouldn't it have?

Andres

I don't disagree ......

But The R ..... Is a different story ..... :D

never had the inkling to test ride one, though if that ugly orange frame was black it would certainly
improve the look of the bike, but at the end of the day they are all just GS Wannabes, even the can is a copy of the TU gs.:nenau

Every review that I've read is positive for the R on road. I was very disappointed that my dealer couldn't get one for a test ride. It's big and tall and feels great, just to sit on in a showroom. You don't get the electronic suspension, but that could be a good thing.

Yep ...... I've used that on both road and off road bikes with great results :thumb

Is that the white stuff?

Like 1960's dog shite?

Ok so I'm confused now (a normal state for me at my age these days! :D).

When I was considering a new bike a while back I looked at and test rode the standard KTM adventure., and a very capable bike it is! I also checked out the R and found a couple of reports which said it was more off road biased and to go for the standard bike instead if you were mainly riding on the road. I also saw some video test (US based though) which said exactly the same thing. Whilst none of these said the R is a bad handling bike on the road, the ones I saw at that time suggested it wasn't as good as it's more ordinary brother on the road, but was exceptional off road!

The dealer I went to also confirmed this and advised that the standard bike was more suited to my road biased needs.

Things might of changed as more reviews have come out, and I guess there is no substitute for just getting out there and test riding one (assuming you can find an R demonstrator of course!)

If you've got a couple of good reviews of the R on the road which are worth a read then please do share :thumb2

IIRC Bike magazine ran an article where they prefered it as the better road bike and if my dodgy memory works even better there was a scan of the article posted up somewhere in the KTM section?

From my own personal experiance I can assure you the R is not lacking in the handling department, not by a long chalk, I would describe the handling as exceptional and the only time you notice the 21" wheel is at high speed where there is the mearest hint of reluctance to initialy turn in (TBH you have to be looking for it, it's that slight), it really is not an issue. And as for the suspension, it just keeps getting better the more miles I get on her (and that's coming from a GS with Wilbers front and back).

As a complete package the bike really is something else, the more you ride it the more you come to appreciate that :)

as i recall, Bike road tested the standard 1190 which they loved. the following month there was a supplementary piece by one of their testers about the R. he was expecting to find it worse on the road, but this was not the case and preferred the R.

all i can say is, the R must be fucking awesome, because the S does everything i want despite looking like a V-Strom :)

Yes, Andres .... I read that article. In essence the road tester (can't remember who it was now) waxed lyrical about great suspension and the way he could put down power on a typical country road thanks to that big rolling front wheel and slightly longer travel .....

Here you go Giles, just to keep you going until next Friday :)

Taken this morning on my way to work - I just had to pull over for 5 mins and just look at her, admire her curves and then shoot off again and spank her!

Andres

Very nice .... Can't wait!

:beerjug:

Thanks for the feedback on the R - always good to add owner experiences into the mix with press reviews.

I'll add the R into my list of potentials when I consider changing bikes next year :thumb

It's a good job you didn't buy it for its looks :aidan

Indeed, 'twas bought for it's superior performance, engaging ride and that indefinable something called soul :P

Having said that I also think it looks fecking gorgeous so there :)

Andres

That's all that matters :comfort:D

and you are buying the GSA for its looks

Looks are secondary, but yes, I like it.:thumb I don't go into the garage and wank all over it though.:P
