God alone knows what I've done but I have lost all sound on my PC. I have tried playing a music CD through all the media players, I have tried playing something from my iTunes library and I have tried playing my sound effects from windows - nothing. Clearly the sound is working as you can see the graphics etc going up and down in iTunes etc.

I have tried doing the full troubleshooting thing through Windows. I have checked the sound card is working properly. I have tried a system restore in case I changed something. I have even uninstalled iTunes and Quick Time Player as they were the last sound specific things I installed.

My speakers are built into the monitor stand and there is no seperate feed to them. I haven't pulled out any wires and they were working fine.

Help :nenau

Has something managed to "Mute all"
check via c:\Windows\System32\sndvol32.exe

On this machine (laptop) there is also a "Fn" key which can be used to mute the speakers - could you have hit something similar on your keyboard by mistake ?

Have you installed anything recently??

There are some odd conflicts that come up...I had Norton tools screw up my TV card sound a while back..totally illogical but it happens :nenau

I checked all the sliders (wav, cd etc. - all on max).

I have installed Microsoft anti spyware and another antispyware thingy but they got deleted again when I did the system restore and it still didn't work.

I know I mysteriously lost sound when I installed SP2. Couple of XP updates later, it mysteriously came back on again

If you get into 'Control panel ' 'Sounds and Audio devices' 'Audio' tab is your soundcard listed as the 'default device' ?

Alternatively, if you can find the 'device manager' in the 'System' icon from the control panel, it might be worth disabling this sound card, re-booting the PC and letting Windoze re-find it and load the appropriate drivers again.

Hope this helps
