It's gone a bit bubbly

Erm, KTM.

No, really, I've been very impressed with my 990. I can't say it hasn't corroded at all - the screws holding on the end cans are pretty brown - but that is it. Apart from the short section of exhaust pipe immediately d/s of the cylinder, but that would polish out. Nothing like engine casings or subframes - they are mint.

I've used it pretty much throughout winter and clean it about once a fortnight with lots of water. It gets a liberal spray of FS365 afterwards but that's all.

My old 1200 GS got the same treatment but didn't fare half so well.

Sorry, guys, but it's a fact. KTMs are better made than BMWs.

Who gives a shite ..... We are not going to base that because a bike looks nicer after a winter than another bike then it is better.... I saw a KTM 990 blow it's radiator pipe in stop start, stop start riding in London.... I went past him on my air cooled 12GSA...I didn't think my 12 GSA is a better bike than his.........................well actually I did....:D

What I can not believe is not washing the bike at least weekly but relying on some after market spray on product to protect your bike. How about giving the supplier of the magical spray on product a hard time or wash your bike more regularly.:blast It is winter up your way with all the salt and shit on the roads give us a break.:nenau

Your wife may listen to you but we don't give a rats #^*:aidan

Solidback
My rocker cover corroded which isn't normal (cue a million posts from peoples rocker covers that have corroded) - just one of those things - probably the coating didn't quite cover where the oil seal cover is - defo a factory fault. If its still under warranty, BM will sort it.

Oh and for all those who think that jap bikes are more corrosion resistant than bms, all I can say is HA HA HA!

Speaking of corrosion, my centre stand is starting to look a bit sorry for itself, so I'll be getting the hammerite out any day now - hurrah!, first use of bodgerite to my bike!

I'm not a BMW groupie (ride KTM) but nevertheless I would be intereted to know what make of bike you are going to get that wont rust / corrode at all with salty british winter roads.

Maybe a BM manufactured in the seventies? but agree with above there are NO modern bikes that will not corrode if left untreated to the vagaries of a British winter.

Corrosion

Are you lot Arabs by any chance?
I could sell you all some sand and make my fortune............
At least I could then afford to pay for all the repairs and replacement parts needed to keep my GS on the road in the future!
Any offers for my new GS 57 Model?

Being as your bike is obviously so crap - how about £50 to take it off your hands:augie

unfortunately you little outburst :thedummy says more about you than it does Bmw Gs :blast- hope you are enjoying your new...car?

Don't shoot the messenger - I have owned and ridden lots of BMW bikes hundreds of thousands of miles. Sorry to say the 1200GS is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Gives me no pleasure to report this as it was because of the BMW boxer that I got into motorcycling. LOVED every BMW bike I have ever owned other than the 1200GS. My 1150 RT was and is a SUPERB bike and the best motorcycle I have ever owned. Just don't like the direction BMW are going with dumbed down design and poor build quality. If you are happy with it then good for you, it takes all sorts to make a world. I need a bike that will start and run reliably unfortunately the 1200GS won't do this for numerous reasons, the most obvious being hopless poor design of both the tiny battery and the unbelievable water trap over the canbus controller for the fuel pump. Again if you think this is OK then who am I to question your judgement. What I am not going to do though is submit to your insults and rants when making perfectly valid observations about the shorcomings of the 1200GS design.

Don't shoot the messenger ....yada, yada...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...yada, yada...What I am not going to do though is submit to your insults and rants when making perfectly valid observations about the shorcomings of the 1200GS design.

maybe valid, but i for would be happy not to read you repetitive ranting ever again.

you had a bad bike, you moaned about it, you sold it, you still moan about it.

they're not all like that. maybe that makes you're just unlucky? :nenau

get over it.

Given that, in your first post in this thread, you called everyone else in the thread "idiots" and suggested that they "pull [their] heads out of [their] asses" do you not feel that the above quote is a little rich?

didnt insult you or rant- yes these observations are valid because you have personally observed them, but why complain so much? you obviously feel hard done by, hard done by due to a decision you made for yourself, which you feel compulsed to tell everybody about- which is why i said your comments say more about you than of GS quality.

Thank you for enlighting us to the quality issues BMW are suffering, us being idiots with our heads up our arses, means that we would never have known that, they do pass them of as a premium product, which now that you have pointed it out, are clearly failing, maybe you would consider being our leader, as your clearly much brighter than the rest of us, and as you have shown we need someone to think for us, we could name you Wolf, and if you agree, you can call us sheep, how does that sound :nenau

:jes:jes:jes

Wolf !!!!!! :clap:clap

Fifty quid

Thanks for the offer of £50.
Ill have to look up the book price in Parkers guide and see if this is a fair offer.
Only problem is they need extra headings under the condition statements saying... crap ..crappier... and very very crap.
Oh and condition after one winter......fully corroded.
Apart from that...a very very nice bike.
Thankyou BMW.:beerjug:

Well I like to piss on BMW's parade because the 1200GS is a heap of shite. Worst bike I ever owned and cost me thousands to get rid of the POS. All you idiots who swallow the line that BMW are a quality motorcycle builder pull your heads out of your asses and look at the crap that BMW now try to pass off as a premium product. NEVER again will I waste my money on these crappy designed and crappy built toys.

Stop mincing your words, Paul! For goodness' sake, say what you mean

Gave my bike it's first wash since covering it in ACF50 at the beginning of the winter.
Bit surprised to find the front engine cover starting to blister as it has only covered 2000 miles since picking it up in Aug 07.
Got a bigger shock when I got to the final drive though...
Anyone else had this corrode?
I'm afraid that I now appear to be in a similar boat to you. Although my bike managed a bit longer - it's a June '05 bike with over 26k miles done.

Front cover has bubbled up over the past few months and rear axle is showing rust.

I've just been replacing the rear shock and managed a few more unhappy surprises. In the process of removing the old unit, a substantial amount of water poured out of the final drive and I've now noticed an oil leak at the 'axle'.

Will be toddling along to the local BWM dealer as soon as I can...! :( Wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't just paid £1400 to get SMWBO's BWM car to get its suspension and cat fixed! :blast

Kai

Worse than that

That tw@t Packer will be along going

ooooooo should have got an 1150 pish

He's not even Scottish he just kids on he is:augie:augie

Now you really have to be a proper twat to actually pretent you are scottish... unless of course you came from Mali and don't play football.. ever seen a Malian in a kilt....

I'm feeling a bit left out. With nowt better to do for a couple of hours, I thought I'd pull the front cover. I was suspicious because I couldn't see any corrosion on the exposed bits, I thought it must be hiding.

Picture is a bit blurred but here's what I found:- Mucky but no sign of any corrosion! What's wrong with my bike? It's an '05, shouldn't it be all flacky and knackered?

All I wanted was some idea if this was a known problem with the final drive.

Yes ( less corrosion then yours , few specs ) , had mine replaced by BMW under warranty:thumb with the latest F.D (and the gear box cover) with drain plug at 6 a clock . According to the dealer they are problem areas and BMW replaces parts as a good will gesture .
