ITS HERE S1000XR

Test ride new 1000XR

Test ride this afternoon, bike feels good and plenty poke if you wish, gearbox better then my GSA LC ride felt plush and comfy for what is a sports bike on steroids.
Excellent wind protection from the small screen, shows you bigger is not always better...just as good as my GSA. Clutch heavier to pull the GSA. Overall I enjoyed it
but the GSA suits me better personelly more legroom and for me enough power from that lovely Boxer engine:rob. On a long trip the GSA I feel it's the better bike for me,but for an occasional blast:) Still got a bit of space in my garage.......
Thanks to "Steve" sales manager at Lloyds BMW-BIKES, Carlisle for the test ride now available for all plus most other Bemmers now at Carlisle:clap

Nice to hear. Did you just stick to the main roads? As a fellow GSA LC owner, I'm interested to see how the XR compares on the pothole strewn nadgery back roads.

what can I say...this is it! I did 60+ miles today in dry conditions and I felt really confident on this bike, despite riding it for first time. I felt like home. Engine is awesome in any mode, but it is especially pleasant to your ear in Dynamic mode, when it pops and bangs on overrun or even if you take little of the throttle! Stock exhaust produces very good and laoud sound, so I think putting akrapovic on XR will just do visual to the bike and save bit of weight.

Suspension is very good, I didn't feel too much of a difference between modes, but I didn't feel many bumps either, so it was doing the job well. I really liked the seating position, so you are not sliding forward and backward when accelerating or braking. Seat itself is very comfy, I dare to say it is comfier than my GS LC! I'm 5'12 and I felt that bike is rather tall. I wasn't firmly flat footed on XR as I am on my MT09 Tracer. It could be that bike was in high seat position - I didn't check. There is plenty of leg room and I didn't feel any discomfort in this slightly sportier position.
Screen in upper setting does job really well, I couldn't feel too much of wind blast.

Engine. Wow. It just goes. You really need to look at speedo as you are riding on something that can take your license away from you!:) It is locked limited to 9000 rpm when bike is in run in mode. Throttle response is awesome, not snatchy, very smooth in Rain mode, more direct, agressive in 2 other modes. Brakes are super sharp and you can dose them very well. Stock tyres are grippy and despite starting my ride in wet they were giving me enough confidence to go slightly faster then I would normally do on Tracer.

The only problem I noticed, and it could be big for some and me as well - vibration! At 5-5.5k rpm, I was feeling significant vibration coming from engine to right handlebar. This rev range corresponds to 70mph on 6th gear or 40-50 on 3-4th (don't rember exactly which one). It is vibrating enough that after couple of minutes I felt that my fingers are getting numb. I wonder if anyone else taking XR will notice the same issue or is it just this particular bike that I rode today. I'd like to hear your opinion on that. I mitigated this vibration by either going over 5k or under and that did the trick.

I agree with the above, these were my thoughts from today's demo.

Well today was the day I got a demo on the s1000xr .

The demo bikes are supposedly SE model but there coming thro without several items fitted ie DRL light and this bike did not have the addition ESA pro so only had road and dynamic suspension setting.

Fixtures and fittings look really nice a big improvement from what I first saw at the nec, so I jump aboard and cannot touch the floor as this bike has the normal seat I'm 5'7" (my ordered bike has the low seat) second issue the clutch lever how on earth can you pull it in ! Being non span adjustable my little hands struggle but nothing a pair of fake pazzo's will resolve, fire it into life and the exhaust note is quite nice, straight out onto the rd and as I'm struggling with the clutch lever I just use the quickshifter, its sublime and seamless up and down changes are nice and smooth tbh its hard to tell that the bike is chain driven, suspension felt harsh but as stated only had 2 settings rd and dynamic and rd has always been harsh even on the gs (I'm 13st max) and i usually leave it in comfort. Now up to speed 50mph and instantly there's a lot of vibes thro the bars into my hands ! Not good, wind it upto 100mph and the vibes disappear obviously this could be because the bike needs a few more miles its only done 550 miles but cruising at 70-80 and its rather hard not to notice the feeling in my hands, the screen is causing me lots of buffeting but yet again its something that can be resolved so not a issue. So I'm now out onto the open twisty rds and fooking hell this bike is insane low down its rather rev happy 6th and roll the power on and the torque is immense it also feels like it needs a 7th gear !! there's deffo more noticeable torque in the higher gears, the fuelling is perfect even 6th gear 40 mph and its smooth as a hot knife through butter. Its deffo a licence losing bike for sure, it fools you into riding fast I was doing some silly speeds (not good really) and had to second look at the speedo several times WOW how fast, few times I ran hot into bends due to being so used to twins and had to correct mid corner but its very agile so corner correction is very light and effortless, on my way back I thought id try the heated grips, wearing summer cloves setting no2 and they were not very hot at all and position 1 was pointless theres talk on the net the heated grips on various new models especially 13-14 gs bikes being shite ! these too felt shite and deffo not winter proof I also noted the rear brake lever felt to low and had to keep lifting my foot off the peg to apply the rear brake I'm sure the Hp rear sets would resolve this. I only had it for 1 hr and I've got it again for several hrs where I'll be able to bond some more. I was very impressed but not sure if I was overwhelmed it reminded me of a very very fast Fazer with vibes that I also owned

So when I took it back they said do you want to take this !

R1200RS SE model fully loaded £12995, quickshifter up and down, 2 stage adjustable screen. I jump aboard and notice my feet can touch the floor giving a confident feeling, out on the rd and the gearbox was superb much better then both my water cooled 13-14 gs bikes and the quickshifter was ace as expected, long in wheel base so felt very stable the screen had 2 positions no1 stock pos was the best and caused me no buffeting, upto 100mph and you could sit for hrs, the riding position felt vfr12 but the pegs are high so had a sports bike feel with bent knees and allowed you to move around on the seat when riding spirited. I really like it a lot BUT !! I started to feel a burning sensation in my lower back (I bulged a disc and trapped a nerve at Xmas and have been seeing a chiropractor ever since) so the riding position was not suitable with my back issue.

Do I still want an XR if I had to pay full retail I don't think I would, the Ktm1290sa would be my choice.

Multistrada dvt demo is next

Dave,

Esa pro is only available if you put coding plug. That's what I learnt from one of early PDF files released by BMW Press. My demo bike didn't have front LED either!

Dave,

. My demo bike didn't have front LED either!

Apparently BMW forgot some minor details on several demo models ! Thus no DRL and a few other minor Tweeks.

This is a naughty bike so If you value your licence you really need some restraints otherwise I feel your nxt mode of transport maybe catching a bus

As for the vibes...they definately come from engine, as when I pulled clutch they dissapeared immediately. I don't understand why only right hand was so affected by this vibration, but it was strong enough to start loosing feeling in fingers after while, so I was avoiding this rev range by blasting through it or staying under and I didn't suffer anymore.

As for clutch, I didn't feel like I had to strugle with clutch. I don't think it was as light as on GS LC, but wasn't as hard as on VFR800X I rode before buying Tracer. That clutch on crossrunner was super heavy to operate despite being full hydraulic?!

No issue with the cable clutch more so with the lever and how far out from the bar, why have they not made it span adjustable like the fr/brake lever

This is what I found from pdf....

When the “Dynamic Pro” mode is engaged, the new S 1000 XR is able to
show off all of its sporting prowess and remarkable riding dynamics. Once
again, throttle response is perfectly clear and direct, while the DTC set-up
makes it possible to sample the high-grip qualities of sports tyres on country
roads offering high levels of grip or even out on the race track. In this mode,
the rider is required to actively control front-wheel lift and therefore potential
wheelies. The “Dynamic Pro” mode is activated by means of a coding plug.
The traction control and ABS remain deactivated for as long as the coding
plug is inserted, even after the ignition has been switched off and on again.

They want you to buy HP parts....I spent hour in dealership while waiting on XR to come back from test ride...so I looked around and spotted S1000R fully kitted with HP parts and it was equipped with fully adjustable levers made by Gilles tooling... ;)

It's quick but the ktm1290sa felt like it would muller the Xr and the power had a broader usage, suspension was better as was the screen.

Interesting reports chaps.:thumb

I have the HP levers on my R, as the stock levers are awful. It's disappointing that the heated grips are as crap as on my R. I'll take one out in a few weeks, but from reading your views think I'll stick with my GSA and R. At least my 2015 GSA is properly sorted.;)

I was thinking the XR could replace the GSA and R, but don't think so now. Maybe it would be a good second bike?:nenau

you should definitely give XR a go. I'm not bothered about grips, but vibrations could be deal breaker for me. Wind protection was acceptable for me.

I will. But it's a first year model, and I won't buy a first year model again. The grips will be sorted in 2016.:P

exactly what I said IN 2013 ..I will NEVER buy a new BMW model until its at least 12 months old and has been thoroughly tested by the UK riders ..alot of people are saying the same thing and the fault for this lies with BMW themselves

So the heat output is normal then !

Really strange because the grips on the 2015 RS were that hot on pos 2 I had to turn them off .
