Off up the N222 to Pinhão tomorrow

Another great day we left Porto following the river inland. Not fast going but enjoyable nonetheless, eventually roads opened up. We mostly followed the N222, nothing not to like. Felt like an easier day today but we were riding into the increasing temps, got up to 39 degrees.
Arrived in Pinhao and located our digs. It's a small flat booked through booking.com
Casa das Laranjeiras.
Blown away by it for €185.
Bottle of port waiting for us. Fresh oranges from the garden and a juicer machine. Pomegranates and grapes growing too. And a pool with a view.
Gonna be a hard walk back up hill after dinner.

Today's ride from Pinhao to Covilha has probably topped the rest for scenery and the roads have been as sublime as the rest. We plotted using google maps ensuring we took in the N338 up to the peak of the Siera Estrela.
On leaving Pinhao the route took us through miles of steep vineyards. No traffic to speak of, fuel stations at regular intervals. We really have been stuffed full of scenery. The mountains start to fill in the horizon and you start to climb pretty quickly.
The route down into Covilha is very tight but no problem for the bagger so all good for me.
Small guest house with a roof top pool beckons. But we can't get in yet
it's 33 degrees down here. It was 21 up top.

I should mention the lovely people at the foot of the climb in the hide n cheese shop, first on left. Madam made us lovely ham and sheep's cheese sandwiches. Cheese is pictured above.

Paul needed a new vape. At the third garage he found one, however Mrs grumpy who was also the pump attendant at this rural garage need to fill in a form before it could be sold caused quite a queue of farmers wanting to fill their trucks up. Who knew eh?
Mrs was hoping for some ceramics as a gift. Think I've found just the thing.

Just arranging a long weekend in January. Inspired by your trip. Off with the Misuss to eat Leitao and drink port wine. EURO 45 per ticket return from GatPrick airport and a few airmiles!

Excellent news Grant. I saw £40 return from STN the other day.
There are lots of murals across town. Saw this one last night.
Our hotel, Casa das Muralhas is lovely. Feels pretty new, high ceilings, a very busy bistro that was full last night. Superb brekkie with fresh figs and the best coffee of the trip so far.
Decor of the hotel is lovely. Bikes parked in the quiet street outside.
We ate out as the bistro didn't open til 7.30 and we were thirsty. We headed for Porta 32 a 7 minute walk down the hill.
They do slow cooked pork which was lovely. They also do tapas. I went for clams tapas as a starter and it was a superb, huge bowl with a lovely sauce that at a guess was orange and red pepper, got some v nice sourdough to mop up the operation. Other tapas deliveries to other tables looked more like sharing platters.

Off to Salamanca today returning to the the port, but we have Riano and Potes for tomorrow. Back to back - which is best Picos or Portugal. Tune in to find out!
