Could someone please tell me (in idiot-proof speak please) if it is possible to transfer DVDs to my iPhone / iPad?

there is a very slim possibility that the VLC iphone app might play DVD VIDEO_TS files, but i can't seem to find anything to say one way or the other.

as said, handbrake conversion is the way to go. you can use the inbuilt iphone profile for conversion, then bung in itunes, then sync to phone.

the blessed freeware

there are programs out there like this one...which are very user friendly. no dicking around with video or audio codecs/bitrates etc

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPhone/

and this one
http://www.moyeamedia.com/video-converter/iphone-converter.html

which are free, and can be used to convert directly from many formats specifically for iPhones, and sets the audio and picture optimized for iPhone use..

there are a lot of commercially available ones also, they are cheap usually (20 quid)

The VLC app plays video_TS files, though ones with the Macrovision copy protection may get in the way.

VLC is simply outstanding for iPhones/iPads, though, since you can use several other video formats other than the native iTunes one. avi, mpg, mp4 and others all work. At a price point of free, VLC's a good deal, too. You might want to get it soon, since there have been rumblings about it being removed from the app store over a potential conflict with the source code licence.

Does handbrake actually work - I don't think I ever (at least not recently) converted a .ts to iphone format with it - crashes every time.

Handbrake works great and you can either create files which will play on any apple device or be specific to say Apple TV. I have just converted 50 odd films for Christmas with no problems at all and used it for over 2 years with no issues - best programme by far and free

i use it mostly for things Visual Hub fails at. never had a problem with Handbrake, but VH seems a bit easier so is usually my first choice.

VH is sadly no longer available, so no development been done for a couple of years. Handbrake, on the other hand, is updated regularly.

i only have experience of the mac version though.

That's what everybody seems to say ('cept me) what am I doing wrong?

This is what I do to transfer DVD to iPhone/ipad or Mac.

I use mac the ripper to copy the whole disk to the harddrive, this has the benefit of deCSS'ing it (i know handbrake does this) the main reason is that it takes about 5-10mins per DVD and it lets me batch (line up) multiple disk encodes in handbrake.

Using Handbrake in a disk by disk is convenient but tiresome and slow. If you pre copy the DVD's you can load up 10 movies and hit go, the next morning they are all done.

Handbrake also seems to run the DVD drive flat out (on my mac mini) while transcoding from a DVD disk.

I use the iphone encode preset in handbrake the file size is about 1.5gb per film, you can use the apple TV setting and while it is better quality the 4gb + file size is not warranted for the slightly better quality.

I would rather have 3 x as many movies on my ipad (or space for other stuff) than the "best" quality. do a short test on you ipad and make your choice.

so in short I would rather spend and hour setting up to the encode 10 disks than having to remember every 4hrs to change disks.

just my 2cents

On a technical note almost every program will be better if you convert from a file on the hard drive as opposed to the dvd drive.
When you transfer a flim on the HD is transfers at the max data transfer rate of the drive which will probably be somthing like 16x time the speed a film will normally play at.
When its converted from the disk to mp4 or whatever format you are going to use on the phone, it can read and convert the data at a higher rate than that.

When you convert directly from the cd to file it normaly only converts at the play rate ie a 2 hr film will take around 2 hr to convert.

Hope that makes some kind of sense
