Anybody managed to get iTunes working with a NAS?

AFAIK it got broke around iTunes version 10 and seems still not to be fixed.

Anybody have a way to make it work?

My buffalo NAS works in as far as itunes recognizes it in the shared menu on the left hand side and let's me access the music / videos stored on it. However ever since about V9 of itunes I have to 'mount' the NAS manually if I turn the computer off (which I don't do very often as it's my Macbook and is in use most of the time) ?

Network Attached Storage

usually a hard drive, or array of same accessible over a network by several computers.

My QNAP NAS has an app that publishes music so it can be seen as a server in current Itunes. However it works better for me to mount the NAS as a mapped drive and set Itunes to use that as the music folder under preferences advanced settings.

I have a mac mini as a media server, but the itunes library is held on my NAS (synology 412+)

I get the ease of running everything through the mini but have the storage capacity of the NAS. Works well for me.

And you can access the NAS library from iTunes on the iMac?

That works very nicely thanks.:thumb

The problem seems to be that most NAS devices use Firefly to serve up mp3s, but iTunes 10 and later lost compatability with firefly and development has stopped.

IanMac's suggestion is an excellent workaround.
