Ever wonder why BMW offer a extended warranty after there bikes reach two year old ????? unlike the Jap bikes which dont :confused::confused:

After a final drive, three indicator switches, cam sensor & a gearbox go bang think I would be a bit more than nervous after my bike gets to two year old, what do you think :confused::confused:

Don't tend to keep bikes longer than the warranty,if bmw only think its good for 2 years then so do I!

Wish I had the money to change my bike every two years, after parting with over £10,000 for a bike I had it in my mind to keep it for a long time :blast:blast:blast

Cos BM reckon that there bikes will go for three years without a problem whereas Japanese manus reckon they will only last 2. After all they would only offer an extended warranty if the majority of people who buy it won't use it.

And BM seem remarkably good at honouring their warranty whereas the japanese seem very good at wriggling out of warranty claims

God wish my BMW HEAP OF SHIT went three years without a problem :nenau:nenau:nenau

I can't understand why you keep a bike you call a pile of shite, cut your losses and move on.If money is an issue buy jap and come back to bmw later

buy an airhead , if it breaks hit it with a hammer and it works again , magic .:)

FFS mate, if you don`t like it, get rid of it instead of whingeing on and on about it :blagblah

BuMW offer the warranty because:

a) They make money out of it because they are pretty sure there won`t be too many claims. You can get the warranty for 4 years and up to 80,000 miles and I`d love to hear of any other bike manufacturer who offers that level of cover.

b) Customer service. For £300 odd a year, riders can happily ride their pride and joy with the knowledge that if it goes bang, they won`t be having to part with the holiday money to get it fixed.

c) Customer retention and loyalty. You have to have your bike serviced by a dealer so it keeps you in their dealerships and buying their stuff. That my friend is good business practice. Like it or not, that is what they are in business for.

aye.. my 10yr old had its first ever breakdown a couple of weeks ago. Hall sensor. cost me £181 to buy a new one and have it fitted.

prior to that the nearest its come to a breakdown was when the RHS HT lead died.. still managed to ride it home 30 miles on the one cylinder though.

mines a 'keeper' too. :thumb

Currently I own a 32, 31 and 30 year old Yamahas. At least one of which is still as yamaha left it and being thrashed 45 miles each way into london. The others I confess I've extensively rebuilt from the frame up. But show me any 30 year old bike or car that doesn't need major work. I will say though the orginal 30 year engine is on its last legs and I'm using it to gain realtime info on the ignition sytem (meaning I have to rev it to 8,000 RPM on the bench and record data from various measurements - fun with a 500cc single) before it dies. It will get total rebuild and blue print for giving up its secretes. I've built a working CDi box, but need to be sure it follows the original.

My 13 year old Triumph is still going strong, all 900cc of carburetted fun.

MY 7 year old beemer too seems to run ok......bit rattly around the valves...Hall sensors? mmmm maybe I'll suss a retro fit for the beemer too. £180 sounds expensive knowing how these work. :rob

You should read the Bosch book of ignition...the problem is finding components with the right packaging, making it work is easy. (now that the real engineers have sussed it out and published the how to...)

Well my first 1200 went for 4 years without a problem, I didn't get the extended warranty and my tightness paid off. I liked it so much I bought another!

Did the you hear the one about the guy who bought a C90 and then it siezed due to a broken gudgeon pin circlip - Honda supplied a new circlip under the terms of their warranty!

You missed one;

Residual value!! I'd like to think I know a thing or two about it as I happen to run the used car programme for another German marque with a 3 pointed star.....:thumb

Warrenty

My 2001 1150 GS ay 78000 miles only let me down once, (apart from me falling off it!) and that was when the throttle cable went on the way to the TT weekend and then the RAC saved me from a good soaking by all accounts!.
So, as far as reliability goes no complaints. Lesson, buy an 1150 or an 1100.
(and it hasent corroded away yet!).
