Does anyone know where the JJ Cobas K100R Flying Brick is?
I'm building a replica and would like some more info and a fairing if possible.

....I know it's a long shot!

Mike.

Here's what I have to work with.
The engine is currently having the crank & rods balanced, higher comp pistons, head ported........and the list goes on. It should be a nice motor when it's done.

is that an airhead lurking in the back ground
No,the front wheel you see in the background is the Devils own GS TE-I'll be selling that ASAP next spring!
I do have two Airheads pictured. The red bike is a shortstroke 927cc. The picture of that bike was taken in the paddock at Spa in July when I rode this years Bikers Classic.
The turquoise bike is a favorite of mine,my R100R.

There can't be a lot wrong with the 80R,there's not a lot to an 80R!
My 100R seems sensitive in the carburetor dept. I have to keep them really, really clean. I bought a large ultrasonic cleaner just for that job.
What's wrong with your bike?

The original was in the "Basella "museum in Lerida, here in Spain , at least during 2009....It was then owned by the "FOLCH" foundation. I'll have a looksee...if I find out more I'll let you know... What a fabulous looking brick that is...There are a few pages of knowledge on Google...in Spanish...can you speaky?...Because you will do by the time you get it finished. Apparently one of the major hurdles the team experienced was that they were not able to alter the standard program of the ECU ( the acronym probably didn't even exist in those days....) so in order to acheive the 9200rpm target of their power intentions they had to bridge some of the pins and cut feedback to others...it was quite a while before Bosch/BMW realised that this project had potential and began to offer help... Among other things, the Cobas team had mounted the ECU vertically instead of the original horizontal position, so after 30 laps of Montjuich the ECU would cut out because it finally recognised that it was tilted...the team would then fit a fresh ecu and go back out caning....the removed ecu would work again after a horizontal rest...!
I think you have a really fabulous project on the go...if I can help at all then pm me ....I don't live near Lerida but am perfectly fluent in Spanish and would love to help get your bike looking right , its up to you to hold on and ride the animal when you get it done- I'll watch!
PS...you might want to consider a brace on those forks....

Have you got these pics already?

Frame is rather different- defo not standard K100...still a gas torch, pipe wrench and welder would get you there...
and maybe there isn't a fork brace after all!
Looking around the web in spagnol, there are a lot of posts remembering the bike. It should be possible to find out where it is.
Is your wife/ partner up for a holiday in Spain...looking at one motorbike?

And...there are some really good bits in this article...of particular interest- if you weren't already aware..., that the fairing was basically from a Suzuki RG500GP, forks from Kayaba (40mm), Cobas apparently rotated the engine "up" so that the cylinder head and sump wouldn't ground out......and more stuff....
http://www.sobreruedasfm.com/2011/10/la-afeitadora-bmw-k100-cobas.html

However, the really interesting bit is the rear suspension...where is it? Apparently Cobas designed some dogbones and used a Decarbono shock...but its pretty compact...almost invisbile....you can just make out some stuff maybe on the left side...

Hi,
Thanks for your information and interest in my project.
I'd worked out that the fairing was a modified RG item and I've found something to start with.
As for rear suspension I'd seen the Cobas set up but I'm going to run a stock rear end just to keep things simple and usable as apart from track days,I intend to use it to "bother modern bikes" I've also got a 16 valve Paralever rear end to try as I I'm not keen on the effects of torque verses suspension. The downside is you lose the simplicity of the rear with the Paralever. The motor is away now having some in depth tuning mods to help the Brick fly.
We have a place in Spain so finding an excuse to go there won't be a problem. Research has been halted at the moment as I'm doing so much physical work on exhausts, frame mods and fitting different radiators as the stock item is so wide,it will foul any fairing.

You are obviously well on the way. Probably more than sensible to use a paralever rear end...Cobas' suspension was specifically designed to limit rear wheel movement because he was aware of the torque effect and how it would not help the pilot. Paralever gets around all that. I like the idea of using a K to harass the more modern bikes- and no real reason why it shouldn't. Once you've removed the three tons of standard fairing and wiring loom and refined the springing it should absolutely fulfill the mission. Have you decided on forks springs and rear shock? What wheels will you use? How are the radiator fitting trials going?...Its a fascinating project and I hope you'll put up some progress reports from time to time.

Weight is big issue on the early K's. Everything has gone that isn't needed including miles and miles of unwanted ABS wiring. I've left some relays in place for indicators to make life easier on the road.
As for suspension,I think I will use a Wilbers remote reservoir unit. I have one on my R100R and it rides better than my 2014 GS TE-that really pisses me off!!
I have 2 rads. An all alloy job for a BMC Mini and an 05 GSXR 1000 but it's too wide. I need to alter the in/outlets,fitment is looking good but I'll wait until I have the fairing fitted before final fitment to avoid any interference.

I managed to get some bodywork offered up.
The radiator fits inside the fairing which must be an accident! I need to make some permanent brackets for the rad from thicker alloy plate, bottom will need securing too.
I've had to split the seat to get it over the frame rails, the K's are big girls.
Still a long way to go.

The larger diameter K1200RS headers need some serious modification to get around the gearbox. The 1200 'box is different infront of the swing arm, this allows the for a longer header on #4 cylinder.

I've had to weld new tappings into the rad to suit the BM's needs.
Brackets now finished and at the bottom is the in-line thermostat housing.
New cooling fan installed.

Wilbers fully adjustable suspension tried in place.

sorry MM never got back to you been off line for a while .. R80R had the carbs rebuilt at scrimingers a while back thay probably just need balanced revs are up an down like a yoyo to many prodjects on the go just now but need to get it sorted out soon

It sounds like you've got an air leak. Spray something around the carbs like brake or carb cleaner. If the revs are affected by the spray, you have a leak.
If you already know all this,I apologise-just trying to help.

Good luck.

Only just found this thread - what a great project and an interesting bike. I'd never heard of the flying brick. I thought it was a term for any early K bike rather than a specific racer. Anyway, good luck and I look forward to the updates:thumby:

Thanks for the interest.
Frame and wheels are off for powder coating and I'll be collecting the engine from Steve Scriminger soon. Then the hard work will begin.
I'm riding the bike at the Bikers Classic at Spa in July so everything must be complete by then.
