JohnGS1100 Tuning Chip

I get about roughly 45mpg no matter what kind of riding i do, be it long runs or short commutes (as long as im not ragging it). Using John's stage 9 on my 1996 R1100GS with aftermarket exhaust, decat, standard air filter and beige (30/87a) CCP.

If you were getting 50.33mpg, what sort of improvement on that are you expecting? If i could get that I would be very, very happy.

Mikeboy, has S8 on his 11GS with after market exhaust otherwise same spec we've toured together his bike is around 5% better on fuel so I felt swoping S9 to S8 may improve mine to simular MPG:nenau

Ive got a stage 7 chip from John here for an 1150 single spark if anyone wants it - given to me but not right for my bike. gratis.

Hi
I would be interested in the chip and happy to make a donation to a charity of your choice. Regards
Dave

Hi John, the chips (1150RT and 1100GS) arrived during the week when I was away. It will be a couple of weeks before I have time to fit the RT one, but I'll report back here after I have.

Fitting the GS one will be some time off....

Thanks for letting know.

I wait and others friends who receive it the chip for posting here about results please :)

Hi John,
I'm having some work done on my bike following work on my throttle bodies. I will have the bike back next week so I'll fit my chip and report back soon. Thank you once again !

Evening John,
My "economy" chip arrived last week while I was working away, hope to get it installed and tested over the weekend, will report back once i've managed to get a few miles on the bike.

Many thanks for your generous gift (second one):augie

Maybe I do have a limp wrist,
But I do consider myself to ride quite smoothly,
Especially two up.
I have noticed and chatted to you about my bike pinking under low rev high load,
So maybe the s8 chip has more midrange advance or just as likely my timing is a bit advanced,as I did fit some new hall sensors and have never bothered to actually strobe and check the base timing :blast
Might be a good idea to actually check it:augie
Edit,I was a bit concerned about the pinking when touring in the alps etc,low speed hairpins etc,but never got round to checking timing,it's on the to do list

Finally got round to fitting stage 8 chip to 2003 R1150GS in April. Bike has standard pipes and cat with no engine mods. since then I have ridden several thousand miles in UK and Europe with most of the riding at motorway speeds. For the first time in 12 years I am getting constant upper 40 to mid 50mpg on urban and motorway/fast A roads. Slight flat spot/bogging down at 3000 rpm in 6th gear (probably due to my riding style more than anything else) and definitely more power mid to top end of range. Final comparison will be on trip to highlands in November fully loaded up - done this trip many times over the years and know exactly what previous fuel consumption was. So overall, up to now very happy with Stage 8 modification.
Thanks John and best wishes for the future.:thumb2

Returned from touring in Highlands on Saturday. Travelling solo with panniers/top box at fast motorway speeds I got 45plus mpg whilst prior to fitting stage 8 chip bike was returning 35-40 mpg depending on weather. On "days out" touring around getting 52-54mpg. Back home with mixture of urban and motorway riding I achieved 200miles on tank full with 2 bars still showing. Response between 4000-5500 rpm much improved. Overall very happy with the results.

Hello John, thank you for the upgraded chip. My lean-running single spark have to wait for the installation due to weather: -9 degrees Celsius and 30 cm of snow. Hope to give you a feed-back 5-6 months from now...

Installed the new chip this evening, the engine fired up and seemed to run sweet. I'll be out in the rain tomorrow to meet up with the 'boys' for breakfast so we'll see how it goes and report back.

Also fitted metal QD fuel line connectors whilst I'd got the tank off replacing the old plastic ones.

Thanks John, for my modified engine stage 9 is reached, the installation will wait for good weather.

Stage 9 chip received and fitted to my 2003GS twin spark that has around 109,000 miles on it, I can happily report that the bike now goes like stink! I was really surprised, acceleration seems a lot quicker, the engine is smoother and sounds really sweet, also low speed jerkiness has gone, don't really keep a check on mpg as its a fun thing?
Brilliant! Thanks John really appreciated. :thumb2

checking in from Montana

Hi John,
Received and installed stage 7 on my '99 R1100R and have now run a couple tanks through it and can report. The performance has much improved as most have reported. Surge is gone but I had learned to ride around that so not a big deal for me. The low rpm pull is much improved like when rolling through town at 2-3k rpm and the light turns yellow and you get on it to clear the intersection. No down shift needed, no pinging (pinking) that I can discern. And from 4-5000 rpm on she just rips. Way fun! Mileage is unchanged from a consistent 45 mpg US it has always gotten and I did try to take it easy on that last tank and not play with the power so much. The bike just seems much more relaxed at my normal 70 mph cruise. Cracking the throttle to pass a car can see triple digits quite quickly.

When I ordered the chip my bike was all stock. I did previously have a Remus Viper muffler and cat eliminator on but it was too loud for me and I put the stock exhaust back on. I have since used the Remus Cat eliminator pipe and added a 2010 1200 GS stock muffler. This setup is louder than stock but not as bad as the Remus Viper. I'm still not crazy about the low rpm (below 4k) tractor like chug of the big twin pulses but from 4000 up she smooths out and actually seems quieter and quite nice. I can just hear the engine at speed with earplugs in. I did get rid of all that heat from the cat on my feet which was quite noticeable on hot days. With no cat I was getting a fair amount of spitting and pop on decel (both with the Remus and the GS muffler) so I pulled the ccp and jumped 30/87a which cured most of the popping. I believe this maps the bike to a Euro GS with no cat. Is this correct or should I jump some other combo?

So thanks John. You've a great product!

Thanks for report !!

If your R1100R has lambda the correct CCP is 30,87,87a.
But if your have too co-pot you can try the CCP 30,87a and just adjust the co-pot.
I think it is better no surge and richer afr at all revs of rpms.
