Had my bike serviced (18,000) in late September. 2009 GSA.

Had it in the garage apart from doing approx. 80 miles or so since then and now.

I ACF'd it, charged it up last night and decided to use it today.

Within a couple of miles, "FUEL" starts appearing on the computer with the yellow triangle "!" and the big countdown begins. OK I thought, she needs fuel, so I fill it up. To the brim.

No dice. The warning is still flashing at me and to be honest, its getting right on my t*ts

Until today, my gauge has always been OK, I've had the odd sudden drop in left-hand fuel markers on the display, but all in all, been happy with it.

I've read all the threads, "use the trip computer, forget the fuel indicator, they're crap, they all do that, its the fuel strips"....

I've also tried disconnecting the battery, doing the TPS reset. No dice.

..I mean, seriously, how can a bike that costs so much money have such a crappy system to measure fuel (and this problem looks to now be a well known problem to BMW)?

Will running a couple of full tanks through it "maybe" correct the problem? Let's see...

I wouldn't care, but I've hardly used this bike since Sept 2010, its been garaged.

Grrrrrr.

its a complete pain know how you feel, mine went at 11,000 mls 2008gs , cant remember my total bill but the part (fuel sender unit) was £95.
just couldnt put up with the warning light flashing constantly, even when tank is full.
good luck.

Cheers Pablo, same for me, that incessant flashing is downright annoying and I can't be arsed putting up with it. Has your replacement been ok so far?

Grrrrrr.

Just put a sticking plaster or some electrical tape over it

To redress the balance I think BMW should issue a badge everytime this goes west. Then at rallies it could be a talking point. I would be sporting 4 on my 2008 adventure. Makes me wonder should I buy another BMW as the newer models seem to be worse! Happy Crimbo everyone.:rob

I had a loan GSA a couple of years ago (180 miles on the clock)

It said "fuel" so not doing many miles i put a £10 in and the petrol pump kept clicking (i think this is the tank shape and not the fact its full)

Got back on rode for a couple of miles and the light hasnt gone out :blast

So i know its a 33ltr tank and i have just put 10ltrs in it so i know its going to go 50= miles even if it was empty (it was full would have done 300miles)

Told the dealsership they said they know just didint tell me :blast

The bike is only just out of the manufacturers warranty so ask your dealer to contact BMW and request a goodwill claim unless of course you purchased an extended warranty in which case contact the warranty company :D

So I`ve heard................

Well, I am on my third fuel strip in 7,000 miles.

I have read on a USA forum that BMW have now replaced the strip with a float device (woohoo, good move BMW chaps - the strip aint no good!).

Sadly it cannot be fitted as a retro-fit so us loyal cusomers who are stuck with the strip are stuck!

never mind, could be worse, we could run outa fuel.................

:D

Strange

Mine stopped working last March.
Went to Bala on Sun and it worked perfect there and back.!

:nenau:nenau:nenau

worked fine after the new part , however only did another 5months and 4k miles before i traded it for a newer model.

Welcome to the club, I had to have mine replaced recently.

A good bit of advice, which I suggest you try, is to remove the side panel next to the FPC, and try checking the contacts (clean / reseat), if you have been working on your bike putting acf on it, you may have caused a problem. you've nothing to loose, and even if it does not sort it you will feel better.

What was really odd about my failure, was that I took it out the garage, I turned the ignition on and watch the fuel guage drop, mind you the bike had not been used for a while.

Good luck though.

when was the changeover to the float system?

Worth a shot Chablis, cheers. A job for Saturday I think.

Rudiemoto of the NW parish has also offered to try to reset the error codes on the bike (it had a poor battery charge when I fired it up just before all the grief started).

Failing that, I'm sticky taping over the fecker and flogging it. Falling out of love with this thing tbh, considering going for another orange bike :green gri

Fuel gauge

Riding my recently aquired 1200 I filled it up on sunday and for about half a mile the gauge showed emty with yellow lght on, I thought oh, here we go!.
but after half a mile all was well. resetting it's self so is this the start of problems

Before finally "going", mine used to take time to register I had filled up, it didn't have "FUEL" and the "!", but the fuel marker bars on the left didn't update until I had ridden about a mile.

3 days in, alas, mine is still fecked.

You'll be pleased to know its not limited to Just you. I've got an F650, and its either: FULL or Half full/empty or not registering at all. I wholeheartedly agree with what you're saying. I took it back as I had only had it a few days and got the standard "we cant really be arsed to loook at it cos we've sold it to you now so fuck off" reply and also the " Oh i'm sorry SIR, they all do that" If your car did that it would be faulty, but its acceptable from BMW. cnuts!!!!!
