Joining a pre-made route, halfway along its length - How do you do it? - And how the hell do you stop it recalculating and sending you around?

Before I ruptured my Achilles, the BMW Connected app performed pretty well on my 1600 and 850 GSA. It’s as if something has been changed in the year or so since???

Some progress here, but it’s not totally clear.

I rode the same loop twice today, imported into the CA as both waypoints and then support points.

Navigation was started at the same point, part way along the route and using the direct route option, and I purposely made an incorrect turn part way into the route (at the same point for both loops)

For the route with waypoints the CA acted as expected, constantly rerouting back to the 1st missed waypoint. (The proposed new route was displayed clearly on the map)

For the route with support points the CA rerouted but it wasn’t clear where to (the proposed route was not fully displayed on the map, just a short branch in blue 30m or so in length) make a u turn requests were more frequent than the waypoint route. Even when I was 25m away from the original route it was still telling me to turn around. Once I rejoined the route normal navigation returned.

Is it possible that you’re following the original route but the app is navigating you back to an invisible support/way point that you’ve already passed?

This is from the support point route, I'm meters away from the original route but it's still telling me to turn around. The blue section that I've not ridden is the short 'branch' I previously mentioned. And I'm wondering if it's the same in your image?

If you've not thrown the towel in with the app completely, I'd try importing your gpx as waypoints rather than support points. The app seems to treat them differently to support points, it's easier to understand what's going on map view wise and you could try skipping waypoints to stop the re-routing issue.
Downside is that each point will be announced.

Thank you.

I am going to have a day away from the Connected app today, not least as my XT and separate MyRoute Navigation app are both running very well.

I am, as a rule, pretty patient with GPS tools. My annoyance with the BMW app comes, in part at least, from the awkwardness of the bike’s cubbyhole, the phone sits it. I usually power the phone in my tank bag but the SAE to USB C converter I bought, switches itself off, each time I turn of the bike’s ignition. It does not turn itself back on; you have to click the switch on the damned converter each time.

Today, I ditched the BMW Connected app entirely, using my XT and MyRoute Navigation exclusively. Both performed very well, with little or no intervention from me. My sacrificial iPhone (with no SIM card) did not overheat, despite the afternoon temperatures breaching 30 C, for two hours. The same cannot be said of my regular iPhone, which overheated, sat in the map pocket of my tank bag. I was not surprised. The XT does not suffer from heat at all.

The sacrificial phone is powered by the bike. It started the day on 100% charge and finished it, 170 miles later, on 100% too.

PS It was nice just to ride around, without the considerable inconvenience of the BMW Connected app misbehaving and / or having to use the cubbyhole.

Understood, final comments from my side. I rode another route this morning. Re-routing, when off track, using an imported support point based gpx is definitely fubared. Routes based on waypoints are working as expected.
I don’t think it’s always been this way, although there is a possibility that I’ve always used waypoint based versions.
I will contact BMW for comments.

Routes based on waypoints are working as expected.

I will give it a go tomorrow.

I have created a My`Route route in TomTom maps, which matches exactly the route I’ll take tomorrow, running on my XT and on MyRoute’s Navigation app.

I have been as fair as I can be, not least as I do want it to work. In being fair I have:

A. Used just enough waypoints (hands) to pin the route in place.

B. Not asked it to do anything that a TomTom route cannot manage.

C. I have not used any shaping points (inverted teardrops) as these seem to cause the Connected app a problem.

Thank you for your help.

Good news!

Bar one very odd glitch, the method suggested by GrumpySimes, where you use MyRoute’s waypoints (ie ‘hands’) to pin the route into place, works a treat.

When I create a route, I place the first point about a mile down the road, which gives a modern GPS device somewhere to aim for, after which the route should run normally. When I fired up BMW’s Connected app, it (quite rightly) pointed out that I was not at the start point, would I like to go via it? I said yes. For the first 10 to 15 miles, all was well. Then, at the first major T-junction, my XT and MyRoute Navigator app, both said, turn right…. The BMW app said, turn left. My heart fell! The BMW app had altered the entire route! The mileage and arrival time had both altered. In short, bugger!!!

Not to give up, I stopped the BMW app, and fired it up again. I then selected: Go direct. The app recalculated, the mileage and arrival time matched the other two devices and the shape of the route was correct. Away I went. Despite going off-route on purpose, the BMW app recalculated perfectly. No more, going back to pass through points or roads missed.

My thanks to GrumpySimes, for all his help.

That’s good news, the frustrating part is that, in my view, support points should work in the same way but without the requirement to pass through each one.
I’ve written to BMW support and am waiting for their response - I will update here once I hear back. I have a nasty feeling that development of the app may have taken a back seat now that the cr nav has been released.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

After an initial response from the connected support team, where they requested and I sent sample gps files and detailed explanations of the bug, it's now all gone very quiet.
Whilst waiting I've had a play with the MRA navigation app which is really good, so good that I've ditched my connected cradle and switched to MRA as my main nav app. It's far more intuitive and it works.

I'll update this thread if the connected support team respond.

The CA team are in Germany however what is worth doing is joining the Beta Test team on Testbirds.
Regulars tests run most weekends, instant feedback and you get paid too!
I’ve found loads of bugs and they’ve been ironed out as well as keeping me in parts £.

Thank you for the update, GrumpySimes.

Like you, I find the MyRoute ‘Navigation’ app very good. So much so that, for the first time in I don’t know how many years *, I am going away without a Garmin GPS unit. I’ll just be using a sacrificial iPhone, running MyRoute Navigation. Fingers crossed….

* I am guessing, somewhere around 38 years.

Worrying to think that BMW are basing the viability of their flagship navigation product on an app from the pound shop. Massive thanks to both of you for resolving the issue for now with perseverance. Off to covert all my shaping points into via points.

Not sure if their some crossover between what's happening on imported routes and the solution offered here. I get that's its a different device, but guessing the software monkeys all use code snippets. I had this exact problem today in base camp, then followed the change to direct, then change back again. Worth a read anyway. https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2262
