First of all I would like to send you my best wishes for the new year.
I own a 2003 2spark.Recently I saw at the local dealer a same model with a "strange" socket in front of the standard power socket. The dealer told that this is for jump starting the bike.I would like to make that modification to my GS.He told me that it's possible but I want to know if someone actually did that.
Thanks guys.:beerjug:

Haven't actually doen it, but wunderlich offer a kit specifically for that purpose, which has a socket with suitable cabling for the load it needs to carry and a jump lead wth plug at one end and croc clips at the other, dont know what the price is though. In the english catalogue in the accessories section page 6

Bought some from Germany but have yet to install. They allow you to jump start without having to disassemble the bike to get at the battery. Think I bought 2 but was before I sold the Boxercup.

Will get it fitted when I get the bike back from the dealers...

I sorta made my own. It's not a socket though. I simply put a big fat cable with an eye soldered on the battery plus, and led it into the fuse box.

So now I can take off the seat, pull the red cable up a bit (top right) and clamp the jump start cable there.

Mass is available anywhere really. At the bash plate for example. Made me a set of cables with some cable and clamps I bought from a car shop for a few euros.

If you don't like to do all that, you can also remove the starter cover (1 screw) and access the plus cable there. That one is also wired directly to the battery.

Or put a heavy screwdriver on the battery plus and clamp your cable on that. You won't have to remove your tank for that. Careful though, or you'll get some unwanted fireworks.

Happy New Year,
Michel

Much easier way to jump.....

Well if you must jump start then you could buy a race/rally booster plug set from Demonic Tweeters..... or why not just remove the starter motor cover and connect your jump lead - positive - to the starter motor terminal and put the - earth - lead to the engine/transmission (mounting bolts good) hey presto no superfuous wiring and extra weight.:)

Battery charging....

Oh forgot this, why not get a power supply plug(BMW dealer) that fits the auxiliary socket and wire your battery charger to it so all you have to do is plug in said socket and you will not have to jump start the old gal because 'yer battery is charged up'.:(

Slider, the one alongside the accessory socket is the positive one and is marked with a + sign. The negative one is mounted on the left hand cylinder head (rear) and is marked - sign.

This is something that 4WD vehicles use for transferring power directly to the starter motor.

The + connection goes directly to the starter motor. The earth (-) at the cylinder head, is the return for the external battery.

This leaves the bikes own battery, sort of isolated, but at the same time in the picture when the bike starts, without removing any power from the bike battery itself.

Mick.
