jump starting my gs 1150

The cold has got to my gs even with a 1 year old odyessy battery . So my options are to jump start it with a battery pack or take it out and charge it up with a battery charger that I will have to go out and buy.Which is the best option ?I have heard that jump starting can cause problems with some modern electrical bits so any and all advice is welcome.Thank you

Don't start the car, just jump the bike. Once started, let the bike run for a few minutes to bring up the voltage a bit.

It would be much kinder to the battery to charge it up. Why take it off? Just use the accessory socket.

Thank you both for your replies.I would like to hear more about charging the bike through the accessory socket.I decided to go down the route of charging the battery up as I won't be using the bike anytime soon with the weather conditions here in Dublin.I know there are lots of real men out there using their bikes but I really prefer the heated seats of my great little awd Subaru Forester.Anyway I digress, can I use any battery charger if I take off the crocodile clips and replace them with the appropriate plug or is there a rated charger and if I go above a particular amperage I will blow the b......x out of the battery.I look forward to hearing any replies. I trickle charge mine through the accessory plug with a standard charger when needed just to give it a boost in the cold

My 1150gsa has an odyssey battery but i still plug in that bmw/deltran tender to my accessory outlet via the starter cover.

I have turned it over and while it cranked quickly the bike took awhile to start. New plugs in etc so maybe i put a bit too much stabilizer in the tank.....

Use the accessory socket.
The only balls-up you can make is getting the + and - the wrong way round when you wire up the socket plug.

There is a way of jump starting a 1150 GSA from a car using the purpose built "Nob" but I've been meaning to ask how to do it for months.

Oddysey batteries on my 1150 Adv and 1000GS - both trickled with the CTek charger (Model No XS800) and the adapter (Part No. ACA66661c) which plugs straight into your power socket so no worries about feckin' up the connections.

Cost lookds to be about £50 all in.

That's bump-starting, not jump starting. Both involve lots of 'energy', but only one is electrical energy.

A GS will rarely bump-start if the battery is flat because a) the fuel pump needs to run to prime everything first, and b) the Motronic needs volts as well. Lack of voltage prevents both of these happening.

Sorry for being so thick. I couldn't bump start my 1150GSA for love nor money. It's a heavy barsteward to push up hill, I just couldn't get enough speed (even with 2 pushing) and as soon as you dump the clutch the back wheel just locks and you come to an embarrasing stop. The sod just didn't want to know.

Bought an Optimate and recharged it through the accessory plug - hey presto I've not had a problem with it since.

I still want to learn how to jump start it with a pair of jump leads though.

Mine has an 18 month old BMW gel battery in it which has taken a beating with the cold so i took it out and stuck it on a charger ............ I didnt even know it could be charged through the socket

Use a mcycle charger DO NOT use a car charger or you will blow "the b......x out of the battery."

Using the "knobs".

Black (negative) from car battery to the knob on the back LHS cylinder head.

Red (positive) from car battery to knob under the back rubber cover

Turn key
Push start

Bought an Optimate and recharged it through the accessory plug - hey presto I've not had a problem with it since.

I prefer to connect my optimate directly to the battery, I have had bad connections via the accessory socket which meant the battery was not being charged.

Charge the battery.
If you jump start the bike - you will still have a flat battery.

Buy a charger either for bike or with a bike option.
Put the battery on charge overnight once a month.
More often if you have an alarm.

Or buy a charger suitable for continuous trickle charging such as an Optimate (other trickle chargers are available) and leave it on all the time.

Some none specialist chargers wont work through your accessory socket so connect direct to the battery (no need to remove it).
Or, a more elegant solution is to wire in an additional accessory socket direct to the battery (via a suitable fuse). This way you can use any charger without removing the seat.

You only have to use the accessory socket, no need for "knobs" or taking seats off. BMW type plug on the charger and just plug it in and away you go simple.

Someone with more brains will probably confirm or correct this, but I don't think you can.

AFAIK the "knob" bypasses the battery and is connected straight to the starter motor.

And will someone please give us the proper name for the "knob"?
