Anyone had a problem with suddenly loosing 2nd gear when pulling away? This happens a short while after selecting 2nd gear and can be a bit surprising as you end up in neutral, over-revving and going nowhere! It may be that I'm being a bit limp-footed in my gear selection, but it has only just started to happen after 1250 miles. Any thoughts?

Did it to me about 3 times this morning but I think it's just that I've not actually made it into 2nd rather than it jumping out. Look a bit daft too leaning into the acceleration only for there to be none! If I'm thinking about it and am a little more forceful with it it doesn't happen.

On both the GS's I've had, R100 & R1200 and on the R1150RT, I found it a little difficult to engage 2nd when cold and especially at low RPM. Once they warmed up a little they were fine. I had a problem with the 1200 jumping out of gear but, as I thought, it was operator error. I had the gear lever moved down so it was easer to make a positive change. I've done 3k miles with no further problems.

Same as laughingbob - low rpms when cold can be tricky but once warm no problems whatsoever. Trick is to lower the selector so it only just clears the sidestand, this gives a positive upchange. 10min job to adjust yourself.

Gear changing - user error!

Many thanks for your help. Certainly the gear dropping seems to have started recently, and could be due to the cold weather and as you say, only happens when the engine is cold.
I will also try and lower the gear level a bit, although my large clown-like boots and silver spurs might scrape on the ground, so I may need to be careful!

i've also dropped the gear selector lever down one notch from the factory position... it makes it much better for me changing up out of first, and more importantly down from higher gears...

I don't ride with my foot on/under the lever though, I only go to it when it's time to shift... if you ride with your foot near the lever, i think you could well have clearance issues... at one notch lower from factory the side stand *just* clips the gear lever when it's in neutral, but only *just*...

You'd need deformed legs to ride with your foot permanently under/over the gear lever on a 12GS

Sounds like you're adjusting it on the splines. If you adjust using the linkage round the back you can make sure it doesn't clip the sidestand even *just*. See here
