Hi, my next big tour is going to be southern Norway in June 2025. I have toured in Europe extensively and normally book ferries and the first couple of nights accommodation ahead of time and then book 24 - 48 hours ahead whilst on tour. I normally budget around £120 per night and spend 3-4 weeks away. I travel alone. Will this approach work in Norway that time of year and is that budget reasonable. I normally mix a few cheap and cheerful hotels and then splash out on something nice every few days. I don’t mind cabins / motels/ air bnb etc.
any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

We toured Norway last August. You can get hotels for that money but perhaps look at air b&b or the cabins on many campsites. We found that booking a day or two ahead worked out fine. Ferry pay, pass can’t remember the correct name was great too.

Autopass for ferje was who we used for the ferry’s, they were very good.

You can’t open an account online if you e got a UK phone as there have been scams but you can email them on [email protected] , they are very helpful and will sort you out, or ring them and speak to them if you’ve got questions.

Basically you deposit 2,000 NOK (about £170) and they charge the discounted rate to your balance, when your done you tell them and they credit back the remainder.

We ran down the west coast from Nordkapp and used 3 ferry’s on some days, saying that quite a lot are free and the ones you pay for are very cheap compared to what you’d expect.

Cabins on sites are a good option if you’re on a budget as food will stretch your daily amount, saying that the quality is very good.

Thanks for the ferry info. Did you book accommodation in advance or on the day. Is there any way to book the camp site cabins on-line. I’d prefer to know where I’m staying the next night rather than book on the day. Cheers

Try a tin of fermented fish whilst you’re there.

Report back.
What could you possibly mean??

We used Ferrypay and set up a debit back to our account, comparative pennies compared to France & Spain autoroutes. I think six ferries in a day came to about £5 ?
The ferries are seen as an integral part of the road system and so there is no easy option to avoid them on the southern coastal route.
Deckhands snap a photo of reg plate and upload.

That’s right, they are very cheap compared with what you’d expect, as you say many of the ferries are part of the road system and are free, we were wandering around in a camper and I think we spent approx £50 on ferries and we took 13 in the end.

Not sure about booking but we went end of August and September and almost every campsite was pretty much empty, I’m pretty sure it’d be busy in the school hols though.

We started thinking about where we would stay tonight using a couple of apps to find campsites ‘park for night’ and ‘campercontact’, but you probably don’t need to plan too much as they are everywhere.
