Now for my juicy ortolan - er, that sounds blissfully like a pubescent Spanish senorina.:rose

An excellent sentence, you are truly a wordsmith.. what time you must have on your hands

If you don't know what an ortolan is, you'd better look it up... I know the French eat some pretty remarkable things, but I'm afraid I'd draw the line at those. I believe that it's not illegal to eat them, just to buy/sell them :nenau

How's the planning going? I'm on a diet in anticipation :fnikefork

"Alors les mecs.........c'est vrai que vous devez suivre un regime tres strict pendant les jours a venir pour etre a l'hauteur de vos pouvoirs de degustation compte tenu les delices qui vous seront offerts pendant ce voyage de reve."

But Ballistic, of course I know .

In fact Ortolans are quite a delicacy amongst certain French hunters in a region we will be passing through. They eat these poor migrating birds blindfold......er, the eater being blindfold, not the bird :blast. The tradition is based upon the complete illegality of the hunt. Does that mean I have to wear a blindfold when commiting certain unspeakable acts upon Mrs. OldRascal?

ps Just thought that a bit of 'blue' text might brighten things up. :)

Just a word of warning, when you get off the ferry: You may have to pat ballistic down for past their sell by date pasties and commercial amounts of peanuts...

:augie

Just a suggestion for your tour - http://www.maison-olivierleflaive.com/maison-olivier-leflaive/en/maison.html Just a few k south of Dijon in the montrachet wine region.

We've been there a couple times now - they do a 14 wine tasing dinner where the wines are brought to you in 3's with appropriate food for 50 euros a head. Great service, great wine and food. Last time we were there ( a couple weeks ago ) we met the owner of the vineyards (Olivier Leflaive), Julie Leflaive (daughter) who runs the Maison and Oliviers brother who helps with the wine making. A proper family run business, where the whole family is passionate about wine.

Can't recommend it enough :thumb2

That looks brilliant and worthy of a detour even at €50 per head. The only problem is that we would clearly finish the meal rat-a$$ed :ChrisKelly which precludes staying anywhere else. And with the admittedly charming rooms at €180, this might be a touch rich in these straightened times.

One for the diary though. :thumb

Aahh.. Mr K. It's a pity you're not up for this... It's rumoured that you're partial to the odd plateful of cold pork fat and maggoty cheese... not to mention duck gizzards, all washed down with copious amounts of the red stuff :D

If only funds permitted...

This could be a great trip, one to look forward to. Time to properly sample local grub and scenery with a good amount of biking, what could be better.

There must be more GSer's from the South West who fancy this trip.

Hi Weavo I live in the same town has you, 9 of us are going thru France towards Austria to watch the Erzberg race then onto Switzerland to do some of the passes otherwise I would have been up for it

Well hello Uncle Ricky, allways good to hear from a Taunton tosser. Good luck on your trip but you will be missing out on these fat blackbirds Oldrascal is going to dish up. If you are ever Hath Beauchamp way call in, the coffee is free.

Will do, and the same to you if you are ever around Cotford st Luke. :D

Will we need to dress for dinner :ChrisKelly :augie

Dressing to the left or right is mandatory. :D

With a bit of peace and quiet from SWMBO and assorted family members, I should be posting some route and overnight stop info by tonight - or tomorrow at latest. :augie Then we will see who has the 'stomach' for a real man's expedition (with apologies to any 'Heels on Wheels' members who fancy the trip).:hide

Circumstances and life's little buggeries sometimes combine to conspire against an honest man's pleasures. :augie

In between family and work obligations, it looks like I am now going to have to propose a shorter gasto-blast. So instead of 5 days of glorious hooning on minor roads and grubbing, I can only now do 3 days and 2 nights. :( But, that also has its advantages in that it will make it easier for those still up for a serious stomach assault to find the time off their own obligations.

From your PMs, you are also having quite a lot of trouble finding the time for a full 5 day trip this month. At the moment, here is the list of Tossers who are 'up for it':

oldrascal
fishbird
weavo
ballistic
gr8roberto

So as a first step and if you are still attracted by a 3 day bash, how about Monday 22nd and back on Wednesday 24th? An alternative could be Thursday 18th and back on Saturday 21st.

As soon as I get your feedback, I will start working out a couple of possible routes and overnight playpens to stay in. :D Obviously we will not be able to get as far down France as 5 days would allow but I can still promise you all a hell of a good time on great empty roads with real French culinary experiences at every opportunity. For reasons explained in an earlier post, I really want to restrict the maximum number to 6 so we will need to 'lock-in to' or 'bow out of' the trip as soon as possible to allow anyone else who is interested to raise their heads. :hide

That'll be a "bow-out" for me then... a shame, as I was really looking forward to a good ride and some decent nosh, but 2 nights is no good for me, sorry :(
If I'm making the effort to get across the channel, it's got to be for more than a couple of nights... especially for those who have to travel a couple of hundred miles just to get to the ferry.
Next time you do a 5-day blast, please let me know.
Enjoy yourselves, as if you needed telling :D

Shame its not 5 days any more, however i,am still up for it. Dont really mind which days we go so I will go with the flow.

That's a pity ballistic and I also was looking forward to the freedom of a 5 day-trip..............perhaps one can be organised in July. :thumb And I really do understand that a 200 mile run before catching the ferry is not something which is a lot of fun, particularly if you have to repeat the process in reverse 3 days later.

Then its 'game on' weavo, just keep following the thread for confirmation of dates and route. :thumb2
