Page 81 of the Rider's manual for the 2010 R1200GS says this about running in:

The first 620miles
  • While running in the motorcycle, vary the throttle opening and engine-speed range frequently; avoid riding at constant engine rpm for prolonged periods
  • Try to do most of your riding during this initial period on twisting, fairly hilly roads.
  • Comply with the rpm limits for running in:
0 to 125miles <5500rpm
125 to 250 miles <6500rpm
250 to 375 miles <7500rpm
375 to 560 miles = max revs for short bursts

and get your first service inspection done between 310 and 745miles :rob

Sounds like the best way of running in a bike to me - but surprising how many people ignore it in favour of some Internet Guru's half-baked theories.

Do you think mineral oil is best for running in? And I wonder what grade?

Riders manual, does that come with the bike from new? If so I didn't notice it but whatever came with the bike the wife took and bunged it in her rucksack and then off we went.

Fair to say I was nice to it for the first 25 miles and a few thousand miles later I still have not pinged it off the rev limiter.
